Our Odd-Ball Top Choices

So.....contrary to our MO with DD, we've chosen names early. Your thoughts are appreciated, though (just to warn you), they're all Bottom 1000 names, so they might not be your style. (Don't worry---I dish it, I can take it)

Boy

Larson Douglas. THE boy's name, set in stone. Larson is a family name for me. We'll call him Larson or Lars. Douglas is DH's middle name.

Girl

Lark Temperance. DH's pick. It was originally Temperance Lark, but he decided he liked the name flipped better. Yes, we've heard of Larkin. No, we don't like it. I like this name, but I'm not sold.

Tallulah Scarlett. My pick. I've loved Tallulah forever, and I think it sounds cute with DD's name. We would call her Tallulah, Tilly, Lula or LuLu. My mom doesn't like the fact that Tilly is also my cousin's dog's name (my family is really close; we all grew up in the same small town), but he's moved a long ways away, I only see him and his wife (and his dogs) about once a year, and, FFS, it's a dog.

Thoughts?

Re: Our Odd-Ball Top Choices

  • I think the boy name is pretty good. It follows the last name as first name trend, but it works pretty well.

As for the girl names, I don't like Lark Temperance because I am not a fan for most noun names and both of those are in that vein. With Tallulah, I like it, but at the same time I would never actually use it myself. I definitely like it better than Lark, and I think Lula is a cute nickname. I wouldn't worry about the dog thing at all, but then Tilly is my least favorite of the nicknames you listed.

  • Larson Douglas - love. Larson is a family name and our first choice for a boy.

Lark Temperance - I like them each separately, but together sounds like a bit of overkill, like trying just a touch too hard. I do like the reverse Temperance Lark better.

    Tallulah Scarlett - very cute.

  • Larson Douglas is a good, solid choice.

I LOVE Lark, Temperance, and Scarlett. I am not a fan of Tallulah at all.

  • Larson Douglas ? I really like it, and think Monica and Larson sound great together.

Lark Temperance ? It's okay. I prefer Temperance Lark. Either of these combos is my least favorite with Monica though.

Tallulah Scarlett ? I like Tallulah, and LOVE the nickname options. I think Tallulah Scarlett is lovely, and think Monica Piper and Tallulah Scarlett is a darling sibset.

It's a good name with a lot of NN options, so I don't feel like we have to forfeit the name altogether just because of the NN Tilly. It's my favorite NN, in part because my mom is LuAnn and is often called Lu or LuLu (she doesn't like it). But I'm a bigger fan of using full names, anyway.

  • I actually really like Larson! And the nn Lars only makes it better in my book. Douglas adds a great, strong mn combo.

Of your girl names, my vote is for Temperance Lark. I am a sucker for virtue names. I do like Lark though, I am just not sure I'll like it 10 years from now. :) It's something that has come up on name boards (recently it seems), and I just don't know how I feel about it yet beyond the initial, "Oh, what a neat idea for a name!"

I am just not a fan of Tallulah...  sorry. :( It sounds silly to me? And I've never liked Scarlett!

Eh, I understand. Tallulah has been on again, off again on our list because I've never been totally sure that a 30-year-old woman can be named Tallulah. I think it's livable, though, and no less silly than Blakely, Brinley, or Briella, so I think I'm past it.

I also love Temperance Lark! (and virtue names). I have hopes of turning it around, but I don't think DH is interested. He's all about Lark.

  • So I'm not really cool with surnames as first names, but you know that. So I'd prefer Douglas Larson. I do like Lars, though. I could go for Lars Douglas, and just forget that you actually named him Larson.

I prefer Temperance Lark as well. My coworker has a Lark, and I thought it to be a strange name. She is cute as a button, but the name is a little abrupt for my taste. And it reminds me of Saved By the Bell (Lark Voorhies).

I don't really like Tallulah or Scarlett. I love Temperance though. I'm an odd duck.

Honestly?  I kinda dig Larson.  It sounds like a surname, which isn't my thing, but it has family significance to you so that trumps the surname dislike.  I like Larson Douglas a lot.

My girl vote would go for Lark over Tallulah.

It is a family surname. We've considered using just Lars, but something about it doesn't work well with our LN. I'm not big into surnames-as-first-names either, but I'm close to that part of my family and I think it sounds nice (and isn't one of the surnames people are just using at random right now, like Anderson or Jackson).

I'm not a fan of Lark Temperance.  I just don't like Lark as a name and I think Temperance is a tough name for a kid, but it doesn't really matter since it's a middle name.

I love Tallulah Scarlett.  I love the old Hollywood feel of it.  I would call her Tallulah.  What a fabulous name.  Don't give her a nickname--call her by that gorgeous, full, melodic name.

I love Lars, but it doesn't really work with our LN. It also might be a little too Swedish for us (my background is half Swedish; my great-grandfather was born there, but DH---and DD---look all Italian, so I think it'd be a little odd).

I agree that Lark is a little abrupt. I thought it made a great middle name, but I just can't fully commit to it at a first name. I love Temperance and think it's lovely, if a little hard to live with (though, admittedly, not any more or less so than Tallulah).

This makes me smile. I'm sort of anti-NN in general; I've kind of used the option of them to ease the "out-there"-ness of Tallulah for our family. But I agree, it's prettiest in full.

Also, I think Tallulah Bankhead is wonderful. You should google quotes from her. She's hilarious.

  • I really like Larson Douglas and the nn Lars is great.  I'm not a huge fan of the girl names although I do really like Scarlett.  Tallulah is the least offensive to me, but it does remind me of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis's daughter so it sort of conjurs up celebrity name images to me.

Lark Temperance sounds like you are trying very hard and I think it contrasts the style of Monica Piper.

  • I really, really dig your boy name.  Family names FTW, always.

As for girls, I have to go with Lark Temperance by default, even though I like Temperance Lark much better.

I've never been big on Tallulah because it just seems like a "trying too hard" name--although I love the nn Lulu.  Paired with Scarlett, it just becomes . . . I'm struggling for the right word here . . . farcical?  Like, the name of a lead character in a parody of the South.  Tallulah Bankhead and Scarlet O'Hara are obviously two very famous Southern figures.  Either name alone would stereotyped as a Southern name, but together, they're overkill times a million. I hope that makes sense.

  • I like Lark and Larson. Temperance reminds me of a stripper for some reason. Not a fan at all.

That's not a bad point. I'm not totally sold on Scarlett as the MN, and I think that this is a good reason to reconsider it. I've thought about Belle (though that might also be too Southern), Jane, and Lark (to appease DH, though that might be too many L's).
