Natural Birth

Will I do myself a disservice if I practice hypnobabies and read Bradley?

I just have no idea what will work best for me.. for those in the know, do you think it will hurt or confuse the process?

  • I've been doing my own mash-up of methods by reading Bradley, Birthing From Within, getting pumped up by Ina Mae, taking a class loosely based on Lamaze, and listening to hypno tracks.  I haven't tested it out yet, but I liked being able to take the positives of each and melding them into my own method,

Be warned: I HATED the original Bradley book.  Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way was much better for me to read, and I liked the illustrations of exercises and positions.

  • Yes you will undermine HB if you study Bradley at the same time.

HB is about convincing your subconscious that childbirth is painless and comfortable. Bradley is all about learning to handle the pain of childbirth, the conflicting message will interfere with HB being successful.

My suggestion if you're interested in both is learn Bradley then do HB. HB will clear the messages that childbirth is painful that you got from Bradley but you'll still have the techniques to use if you want to.

I would not revisit the bradley books after starting HB though.

ideally you'd pick one or the other so that you can focus on it and really immerse yourself in the technique and be ready to use it when you give birth.

  • My understanding is that Hypnobabies incorporates quite a few things from the Bradley method into the Hypnobabies instruction (the creator of Hypnobabies was a Bradley teacher for like 10 years, if I remember right). So, you may see a decent amount of overlap.

Personally, I think it's fine to look a little more deeply into both, if it helps you make a decision as to which feels "right" for you. But, from what I have read/heard, you really do need to choose one method, because there are enough differences between the two that creating your own piecemeal method could backfire during L&D.

  • My Doula advised me to learn as many practices as possible - then you have more tools in your tool belt, so to speak. I did hypnobirth, as well as Lamaze and some Bradley. And, found that I personally really feel in tune w/HB, but def took away some good things from all of them.

I think knowledge is power...do what works for you. If you only do one, what if you're missing out on something valuable that one of the others may really work for you personally?
