No more "Indian Style"?

We are doing a preschool prep "class" for DS because of his disability and we just learned there is no more "Indian Style." It is now called "crisscross" to be politically correct.

What else has changed since 1985? Do they still do the pledge of allegiance?

It's been "pretzel style" for us for decades, it makes more sense to the kids. Do you really equate this with the pledge of allegiance? Come on.

Criss-cross applesauce at DD's preschool too. And they don't do the pledge although they may starting in elementary school.

Criss-cross apple sauce over here. I've also heard pretzel-style at library reading hours and outside activities.

DD's pre-school in NY also had all the objects in the room labeled with the word in both English and Spanish. Is that scandalous?

How funny! DS learned this criss-cross applesauce thing too. I just assumed his teacher was trying to be cute. I didn't realize it's an actual name now.

I have no idea if they do the pledge in the schools here. They don't in his preschool, so I guess I'll find out. I'm guessing not.

Yep DS preschool 3's program calls it crisscross apple sauce pepperoni pizza, Spoons in your bowl (hands in lap).

I work in a preschool building. Some teachers call it pretzel legs and others do criss cross applesauce. No biggie.

DS had a 3rd grade teacher who referred to it as "sukasana" which is "easy pose" in yoga. I guess that really is Indian style.

Ds1 is Pre K in a public school, they do criss cross applesauce, and they say the pledge to both the American flag, State flag, and class moto.

when I was a kid in the 70's, we had handicapped kids and sat Indian style. When my mom was a kid in the 50's they had crippled kids and sat Indian style. They also used to segregate disabled kids into different schools and classes.

DD sits crisscross applesauce and has disabled kids in her classes.

I think I'm OK w/ the evolution that's going on.

I was under the impression that crisscross meant the legs (indian style) and applesauce meant a "bubble" or like a spoon full of applesauce in the mouth which means you are quiet!!!

They also do "hugs & bubbles" walking down the hall. Hands hugging yourself (not touching anyone else) and a bubble in the mouth means its closed and you are not talking.

Ds is in private preschool and they do criss-cross applesauce and have been saying the pledge since he was 2. At his old private (non-religiously affiliated) school they also prayed before meals. At his current private school they do not although they have a little song they sing before meals.

i have no problem with it now being called pretzel legs or criss cross - whatever- it's a way of sitting...

but i will be very PO'd if my kid's schools take away the pledge. Thankfully they all still do it here in my town. It's bull!*** when it's taken away ... but that's a discussion for P&CE, not on the bump.

my son's daycare does the pledge.

and in my twin's class one teacher this year taught them the whole indian "waaa waaa waaa" thing with their mouth - i almost died when they did it at home. But she is from the Philipines and I just don't think she realized that it's not cool to do here anymore... so it wasn't like I was mad - but just shocked.

I agree with this.

I don't know what they call it in preschool but I've heard his OT and PT say "criss cross applesauce." I never knew what the applesauce bit was for; that's interesting it means no talking. Would not have guessed that; I just thought they were being rhymey!

they call it criss cross applesauce in DD's school. they also don't sing 1 little 2 little 3 little indians (it's now about bubbles), but that's really all I can think of. They still do the pledge of alegiance in her school

I teach first grade and it's criss cross applesauce in my classroom. And yes, we say the pledge and have a moment of silence for reflection (schoolwide).

I teach K and we sit criss cross applesauce or "magic 5" (eyes watching, ears listening, hands still, legs crossed, mouths closed). We say the pledge of allegiance as well as our school pledge every morning. I had completely forgotten people used to say Indian style until this post!

Its interesting, I knew about no more indian style ( we said cross-leg when I was a TA 20 years ago) but I hadn't thought about the pledge how much more powerful does the phrase "One Nation Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for All" sound?

Why are we fighting to get rid of the pledge why not just make it a secular pledge?
