Baby Names

DH came around to baby girl's name :-)

I posted a few times during my pregnancy that I was having trouble letting go of my favorite name if our baby was a girl but had conceded that it wasn't going to happen. We ended up with about 6 girl names in various combos of names we both had suggested. We didn't name our daughter for about a day but in the end agreed that the only name that suited her was Dahlia. DH chose the middle name which is River and has a ton of significance to us. A little crunchy/sounds like a place name for some of the board regulars I presume, but perfect for us :-).

We are experiencing some interesting pronunciation issues but most people get it right. Several people over 50 are either pronouncing the first syllable as "Dall" or stranger yet "Dale". I expected some to pronounce it like the Hebrew variant Dalia but was thrown by the Dale thing. It is a minor correction and doesn't bother us. She will be a target for her last name above anything else and there is nothing we can do about that ( sounds very close to a curse word).

  • Congratulations on a healthy baby girl! I think Dahlia is very pretty, and I know you must be loving that you got to use it.

  • I like crunchy names :) Dahlia is a very pretty name. One of my friends has a little girl named Dahlia and she's adorable. Congratulations! Glad your DH came around!

The English pronunciation  Dahl-yah but some sources suggest Dah-lee-ah. I find myself and most get somewhere in the middle of those two pronunciations depending on how fast they are speaking/how much I roll my tongue when saying it.

I can totally see that. I've heard ladies in their 50's and 60's pronounce the flower Dahlia that way.
