hi. i'm lurking from 3-6. my LO is 19 weeks, and i'm starting to think solids. my pedi recommends rice cereal and i know it's most common, but i'm curious if anyone started with veggies/fruits and skipped the cereal. thanks.
We skipped cereal and started with vegetables and fruits that we were eating for dinner. Like PP, we did baby-led weaning. But plenty of people who introduce purees first will introduce pureed vegetables instead of cereal. GL!
We skipped rice cereal because it can be constipating and DD was already having a little trouble with that. She didn't really get what to do with oatmeal at 4 months 1 week, so we waited a week and tried banana. She loved it. We then did sweet potato, pears, peas, squash... We alternated a new fruit and veggie each week. No we do oatmeal every morning and night with fruits/veggies at lunchtime.
We put cereal in her milk sometimes but we never fed it from a spoon. We went straight into Stage 2 solids(I never paid attention that there was a Stage 1 and she had no problems).. Just make sure to only introduce 1 type of food, fruit or veggie, every 3 days for allergy. My pedi recommended waiting until 9 months for meats.
We skipped cereal and went straight to veggies. We started with peas and then green beans. Then carrots, which were a huge hit. Decided to go back and do peas and green beans again before starting sweet potatoes.
I'm sure once we do sweet potatoes, she won't want any of the green veggies.
Edit: We also did squash. Our pedi said to start with green veggies and move to orange.
We haven't done any grains until this week. DD is 7 1/2 months. Grains are less "natural" than fruits and veggies. They have to be processed before eating. They also are the cause of lots of allergies. We started with avocado, pears, banana, broccoli, sweet potatoes.
Re: anyone start with a solid besides rice cereal?
I skipped it altogether and started with sweet potato and avocado. We do baby-led weaning and it has worked out great for us so far!
Once in awhile, I'll coat LO's banana in baby oatmeal, that's the only thing I do with the cereal.
I've actually heard mixed feelings about the rice... how it may constipate and also the arsenic levels...
