Re: Tanning Bed Reality

  • WOW. That is terrifying. I had my first suspicious mole removed when I was in the 5th grade. I've had about 15 surgeries since then removing moles, taking biopsies, etc. Being tan just isn't worth it!

  • I have to get up on my soap box here, y'all, so I apologize in advance:

I'm fair-skinned and from the age of 15-17, I used to go tanning 3 months out of the year for only 3 days a week, for 10 minutes at a time. That's all. I would burn and then I would get a teeny bit of color.

When I was 19 years old, I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, but I was fortunate it was a Stage I. Doctors who treated me made it very clear to me: Melanoma is deadly. By the time most people catch it, it's a Stage III or Stage IV, when there is little that can be done to save you.

I was fortunate (and lucky to slip and fall in the bathroom, which is how we noticed the discolored freckle on my back which lead to the diagnosis) because mine was caught so early, and I'm 9 years melanoma free now.

Please, please, please, for the love of God, please do not put yourself through the unnecessary strain of skin cancer.

    lol :)

I am so mad at myself for all the sunbathing I did.  I lifeguarded for years and would slap on the tanning oil to get as dark as possible.  I would tan all the time.  Dumb dumb dumb.

That is so sad. :( Unfortunately many people don't think about their own mortality until they are a little older and by then a lot of damage has been done.

I am one of those people that just couldnt stand my pale skin and used to Tan at least 3 times a week. I  havent in over a year but still want to slap myself for all the times I went.

For example I lived in Hawaii you know where its damn near sunny every day yet I still went to a tanning salon at least twice a weeks! CRAZINESS!!! STUPIDNESS

I know how you feel!  I didn't tan regularly, but when I look back at how dark my skin was at prom or on Spring break in college, I kick myself.

One day in college while volunteering for the American Cancer Society, I realized what a hypocrite I was.  So I haven't tanned since.

I stopped going to tanning beds because I couldn't afford it in college and then I wised up after reading & hearing stories.  For once, being broke was a great thing, it helped prevent extra years of me damaging my skin!

I burn easily so I'm always wearing sunscreen

  • Before my wedding 9 years ago, I started tanning, because of my very fair skin in a very white dress.  I used to be able to get a natural tan outside without burning.  But my wedding was at the end of September and my tan was fading fast.  I went to the tanning salon on my third trip and they recommended that I be in the bed for 10 mins.  I thought okay they are the professionals.  After 10 mins. I got out, got dressed and went home.  Later that evening I was SO burnt that my clothes were sticking to my skin.  I called my Mom (she's a nurse) and she came over it was awful I saw a Dr. and couldn't go to work for a week because I could only wear loose fitting clothes.  I haven't been to a tanning bed since, and now I burn outside with SPF 50.  I am also very prone to sun poisoning, something I NEVER had to worry about before.  Tanning beds are dangerous!!! Hopefully people wise up.
