Hospital Tour Left Me Less Than Impressed

The hospital is one of the best in the state. It has a top NICU and a low maternal/fetal death rate. They also have Mom and baby bonding immediately. (unless something is wrong) Meaning, baby comes out of mom and goes to breast to suckle or chest if you're not breastfeeding. Overall, that means more to me than anything. And, I like that baby and mom are only separated for a short period of time, especially if she's breastfeeding. BUT...

I'm ok with monitoring periodically, but I want to walk around. From what i can tell, you're not allowed to get out of bed once they check you in. WTH is up with that? I can't even Pee, for crying outloud? No, because we take the precaution of giving you a catheter incase you want an epidural. I DON'T WANT AN EPIDURAL AND NO, I WON'T CHANGE MY MIND! It looks like I'll have to really be sure Alien is close to invading Earth before I leave for the hospital. I'm just terrified I won't make it. I waited way too long last time, and I'm twice as far away this time.

*sigh* if I don't make it, I'm sure my mom will love the experience of catching her grandson, lol.

Re: Hospital Tour Left Me Less Than Impressed

  • I know what one you're talking about I live in that area.   Remember they can't make you do anything you don't want to do.   Also talk to your doctor about your birth plan and if he agrees they should follow it.   I would get his agreement for no cath and intermittent monitoring and anything else you want.   Also if you can I would try to get a doula.  Catholic charities supports an organization for free and reduced cost doulas in the city.   I'll send you the name of it on the local board.

If you can't get your doctor's approval can you switch to the baptist hospital nearby.  They are the only hospital that has a midwife practice associated with it in the city.  They are also pretty natural birth friendly over there.   I delivered my son there even though I had a choice between the two.   Good luck.

  • Thanks. Used to be a great hospital. It was THE place in town to deliver. I was a little upset when I had DD and had to deliver at Wilford Hall. Now, I wish I still could.
  • Holy crap a mandatory urinary catheter...I would completely freak out!

LOL, my BFF did when I told her. She's pregnant again, and got to the hospital too late last time. She said, "They ARE NOT cathing me! I don't want an epi THAT bad. I delivered the other three naturally, I can do this one, too." (We have the same OB.)

The tour was given by a nurse in Education. I've calmed down, and I'm talking to my OB next week. I'm hoping the nurse just didn't know what she was talking about. I was the only person on the tour looking for a NB, so maybe she just assumed I did, too. In which case, I'd be stuck in bed with a cath, ANYWAY. *crossing my fingers*
