My OB this time around is a freak about the caffeine. She said no more than one small cup of coffee OR a piece of chocolate. I get that is crosses the placenta and I don't want to jack up the baby but I really have to choose between a swig of coffee and two hershey kisses? That seems a little over board!! One of the other OB's I've seen thinks its great that I'm back to drinking coffee...he said a couple of cups...whatever was fine (he's older and much more relaxed!!)
Re: How much coffee / caffiene are you drinking / eating?
I have one cup in the AM and SOMETIMES a green tea or a coke later.
Damn I always forget about the chocolate!
I used to be a 3-4 cup a day lady so I am doing my best!

The darker the chocolate, the more the caffeine. I think your OB is being a little silly about the chocolate, especially if you're mostly eating milk chocolate...
I've never been a coffee drinker but I do drink soda. With DD I limited myself to one soda a day (if I had any at all). Then when she was born I cut caffeine out completely when I read that caffeine passed through breastmilk can take up to a week to process in the newborn baby's body (although I don't judge those who do drink caffeine while BFing, I was just a FTM and that info freaked me out). I tried picking caffeine back up when she was around a year old but I realized I'm better off without it. Especially since I'm still BFing.
However I've been seriously craving some Sundrop lately!
Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!
I used to be a coffee addict - 3 or 4 cups a day at least. I gave it up a few weeks before finding out I was pregnant, since I had heard it might help with fertility. I do treat myself once or twice a week to a cup of the real stuff, particularly if I get a bad headache because it's the only thing that seems to work.
I forget about chocolate too, but I'm not a huge chocolate fan so I can't imagine I get much that way.

January PAL Siggy Challenge: Good Advice
If you suffer migraines, caffeine is recommended during pregnancy from what I've read. IMO it's far better than taking another pain killer.
I have been avoiding caffeine for the most part during pregnancy, but don't feel bad about having a cup of coffee here or there. And I'm certainly eating chocolate!
Also, the comment about coffee being bad for your health is ridiculous. Yes, you can have too much, but a minimal or moderate amount of coffee is actually GOOD for your digestive system and can prevent some types of cancer.
Edit: clarity
I drink about a cup of coffee a day. Sometimes I do half caf. I try to keep it to that though. My OB says it's fine in moderation but I don't drink any soda that has caffeine and I am not a big fan of chocolate anyway.
Coffee didn't even sound good for the last 3 months so when I made my H's coffee last Sunday and it actually sounded good, I had a cup.

i cut out diet soda bc of the fake sugars, and that is what i typically drank. im fine drinkning regular root beer (no caffiene) or sprite when i get a soda craving but not drinking too much bc its empty calories. I havent really wanted coffee much since i got pregnant. the few times i did want some, i just had decaf. i used to drink one small cup a day though so not too hard for me. i also find i dont want it as much in the warmer weather.
I do not really watch my chocolate intake for caffiene. And i do normally eat at least a little bit each day. as long as im not eating a bit hershey bar, i assume its fine!
The only liquid caffine (coffee/pop) I have had since Feb 1 was 2 sips of mt dew one day, i hadn't had it in so long, it didnt even taste good. I choose this for myself, I was so addicted to caffine I knew just 'limiting' it wouldn't cut it for me.
I have had chocolate here and there. Like maybe some bite size candy bars (from Easter) like every other day.
I think you have to pick your battles. I quit drinking caffiene all together about 2 months before getting my BFP. So it's been easy for me to avoid while pregnant. I think I've had two glasses of iced tea and a handful of M&Ms since I've know I was pregnant. Salt on the other hand has been a constant battle for me. When I had m/s I couldn't eat much. Pretzels, fries, chips were what stayed down. Now I'm just craving a lot of junk food.
I totally get people needing a cup/can or two of coffee or soda. I don't think it's the worse thing you could do to baby.
I drink a cup of decaf maybe twice a week when i really need it and want to fool myself. On a really rare occasion (like 2 times since I've been pregnant) I'll get a half caff something.I started trying to wean myself down on caffeine when we decided to start TTC in June.
As far as chocolate, I'll have a piece here and there, almost always dark choc but I never worry about "going over" as it's not a lot.
I'm Britt. Me 29 | MH 29
I have maybe a cup or two of coffee per week.
I don't drink soda anyways. And I've found that there are some really great decaf coffees out there, so I've been drinking that when I want a coffee.
But, I don't even worry about chocolate. There is so little caffine in most chocolate (and I don't eat that much of it anyways when I do have some), that it doesn't even seem worth it to worry about it or track my intake of it.

Honestly, I would follow your current doctor's advice. That's why you're seeing that doctor. If you don't agree with his medical opinions, find a different doctor. That being said, my doctor is of the opinion that even as much as the equivalent of two cups a coffee with of caffeine a day has been shown to increase m/c risks.
So, to answer your question, I do not drink coffee/soda/caffeinated drinks at all. I will eat chocolate, and I will drink decaf tea/coffee.

One cup a day. Sometimes a soda in the afternoon. Although, I do go without either a lot. It depends...I used to drink SO much coffee, so I think I get caffeine headaches here and there if I don't have any at all.
I can't seem to stay away from the chocolate! I have some almost every other day. I also have a little bit of pop if I go out to eat or something maybe every other week? Otherwise I haven't been drinking coffee since the smell makes me want to puke now!
Yeah, well, roll your eyes all you want. When you are graced with two kids with special needs and nutritional deficiencies, you tend to be MUCH more careful about what you consume and expose yourself to across the board while pregnant. I hope you never have to worry or wonder if something you did caused a challenge for your child, it sucks big time.

My midwife is really relaxed. I have a cup or coffee or tea almost every day (non-pg I easily drink 2-3 cups of coffee every day). I don't drink coke except on the rare occasion but will indulge in a piece of chocolate or a handful of M&Ms without worrying.
My philosophy is everything in moderation (except obvious things like smoking, drugs, etc).

See - and this reasoning I understand. If you would have just put something along these lines in your original post about this, I would not have rolled my eyes. Your statement, however, came across very holier-than-thou (Why would anyone consume this when it's bad for them, look at me, I gave it up! When you know full well many posters do drink it - so it appears you are just looking down on them).

I used to go to Starbucks 3 times a week before my 7-7 shift. I cut it out completely this pregnancy. No caffeine at all for me. I had a cp in January and didn't want to risk anything.
When I was pg with my second I had a venti caramel macchiato every single day. I do miss coffee and diet coke:(
I have a can of coke or an unsweetened tea in the afternoon if I'm really sluggish and I'm - so maybe 3-4 times a week. I don't eat a whole lot of chocolate, only because I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but sometimes a fun-sized bag of M&Ms is just what I need for a pick-me-up.
A Large unsweetened tea from Wendys has less than 80 MG of caffeine, and a regular soda is under 100 as well, so I'm not having too much difficulty sticking to the below 200 rule...
Salt on the other hand.... salty carbs are one of the only things I can keep down. Fries, baked potatoes... everything bagels... MMM
