Thoughts?  Seriously... people are naming their child Cato & Rue?  Rue as a middle name maybe but Cato?

Re: Top 16 Trending Baby Names of 2012

  • hahahah. this is so funny to me. we're such a pop culture society, it's insane. Granted who doesn't love Hunger Games & Adele, but wow!

I know, me too.  Although Everett is on our list because it's a family name.  I'm not sure where that one came from in terms of pop culture though.

I agree. Although I think Adele is pretty, but because of becoming popular I wouldn't use it.

Me on both counts...are a lot of these names coming from Hunger Games???

I just don't get the whole 'let's name our child after a movie character' trend.  Now granted, I was pushing hard for Stewart (Stewie) if we had a boy...but still...

  • Beckett is A's middle name, but yeah, nothing on that list that I would use as a first name.

  • Blythe? I don't think I've heard that one or Cato for that matter. I haven't seen hunger games. It makes me want to google and see the names from the movie now.

Cato & Rue are from the movie.

I don't know where Estelle, Blythe, Everett, or Beckett or the Weston/Wesley come from in terms of pop culture.

I'm assuming Cyrus is for Miley Cyrus?   Ivy for Blue Ivy?

  • I think on Rue and Cato are from Hunger Games, right?  At least Glimmer isn't on the list!  Emmett is Twilight, and Adele is well, Adele!  The only Blythe I know of is Blythe Danner, the mom in Meet the Parents/Gwyneth Paltrow's mom in real life.  I hope that doesn't mean Gwyneth will eventually start trending.  That's our girl name and we LOVE that it's not a trending name.

Me either.  They are NMS and a little too out there.

  • I'm so annoyed that Adele became so popular! It was on our list for girls names, but now I don't think we will use it. We're going to have to go back to the drawing board if we ever have a girl because I'm pretty sure all of our names have either become popular or we can't use for other reasons.

  • I really like Grayson and Adele but the other names I would never consider.

  • I actually kinda like Beckett.  Grayson isn't that bad either...but the rest I think are pretty far out there!
  • DS is Becker. I'd hardly call it trendy. Wondering why Beckett is popular?
  • Nothing on that list that even remotely attracts my attention.... I like Grayson... But considering it's the name of my cat.... It would be weird if I named a baby that now. =P

  • I like Aria.

I work with a girl named Blythe.

Same here. I had a babysitter as a kid named Adelle and I thought it was so unusual, and thought I might use it one day...until now.

  • Everett is cute, but I don't care for it enough to use it myself.

  • Beckett was on DH's name list for our son because he's a Red Sox fan and they have Josh Beckett as a pitcher. That's the only Beckett I can think of.

  • Well crap.  Where the heck did Wesley come from, because that's going to be my son's name.  I mean, not that I really care if it's popular because my daughter's name is Grace, and that's popular now, too, but it seems to have popped up out of nowhere.  I've had it picked out since 2005, and MH was on board since we started discussing hypothetical baby names when we weren't even engaged yet.  Our last name is a W name, my first name is Wendy and I like the way my first and last name are illiterative (speling?), and I love the way Wes W________ sounds.

  • What?  No Glimmer or Clove?  No Thresh?  I mean, if you're going to pick a name from the book, at least get the good ones!

FWIW, I kinda like the name Rue.  I wouldn't name my baby that, though.

  • my BFF just named her baby girl Aria - we had never heard it used before in Australia - I can't believe it's a top 16 in the states!!! I won't be telling her that - she was convinced it was really unique!

  • I used to think it was weird. However, we have pulled from pop culture and literature for years. I bet some of our most common names today were inspired by books and other cultural influences. I could be mistaken, but I believe Emma is one of them. Don't get me wrong, I don't exactly love the name Cato. I'm just pointing out that I don't think this is a new phenomenon.

As an aside, I was named after Blackberry Brandy.  Seriously.  And perhaps some could argue that Stella is actually named after Stella Artois since that is the beer I favor.  Hmm...what does this say about me and my family???
