I like it and I don't know or hear of many Samantha's around me. I know DH like the name as a middle name. He chose Ashley Samantha. I had to nix that idea because her intials. Ashley Samantha Snyder she would have been teased so bad for what it spelled.
Had you asked me yesterday, I would have said no. That being said, I talked to two friends last night and both of them had cousins/acquaintances that had just had girls and named them Samantha. Go figure.
I think it is, but then I don't want to use anything in the top 100 (200 would be better). Looks like Samantha is at about #12 right now. How about a name that sounds similar, but isn't so close to the top if you're worried? I like Samara (if you can get over The Ring).
Re: Is Samantha too popular right now?
I don't consider it too popular at all. You can always check out one of the baby name websites to see how popular the name has been in recent years.

looks like it's getting less popular
I don't know any younger Samantha's either, but I had checked the name lists and was suprised it was ranked anywhere from 20th-12th.
My son is Maxwell, and I love how "Max and Sam" sounds together. We would probably use Rose as a middle name (family name).
