Your thoughts on Mirena?

I'm thinking about getting this next week and wondering what experience others have had with it. It seems like a pretty simple bc solution, and my MW loves it - is there a downside? Anything special to consider?

Re: Your thoughts on Mirena?

  • I had one before ever TTC and LOVED it.  SImple insertion, insurance covered cost 100% and after a month or two I never had another period or spotting.  I plan on getting another one once we have a 2nd baby!

Totally worth it in my opinion.

I got it because it was estrogen free.  Breast cancer runs in my family.  No pill to remember to take.

I have nothing negative to report on from my use.

  • I really did not like Mirena. First, getting it put in was hel!  It hurt so bad. After the apt I went and cried in the bathroom for an hour before I could drive home. Then I laid on the couch holding my stomach for the rest of the night. I have to mention that this was before a baby. Since they rec. having a child first that might make a huge difference.

This could possibly be a mental thing, but I really don't think it was. There were times when I would scrunch forward to reach for something and I swear I could feel it jabbing my insides. I would get really bad cramps.

Lastly, the strings that hang down would stab Dh in the d!ckhole. OOOOUUUCHHH! It was horrid. It made him hold back and it made it so that I was always thinking about if it would happen or not. It was very hard to just enjoy sex.

I also made the mistake of not researching it beforehand. I got online and looked at youtube videos after the fact and heard all about crazy problems woman had from it.

FWIW I had no lasting issues from it. Removal was nothing like placement. Once we decided to TTC it took four months from removal to BFP.

  • I was going to get it after my DS2, but I wasn't sure if we were TTC again and how soon, so I went with the pill. I'm going for it this time as long as insurance will cover it.

  • I'm also curious about this as breast cancer runs in my family as well and i'm wanting something with low to no estrogen!

  • I am not a candidate for IUDs because of my history, but I have had a few friends and family members use them with mixed reviews. Some people love them and some hate them. The most dramatic "issue" I have heard is of men injuring themselves on the removal "wire" which is much like fishing line. I think it, like any B.C. is a trial and error sort of thing.

  • I am thinking about getting it after this little baby. My husband and I were virgins when we were married and have never used condoms. I was on the pill before hand and we had an oops! We are so excited for this LO but do not want another one for 3 years or so. I am worried that without it, a condom will break or I will forget a pill again. I keep meaning to talk to the doctor about this.

  • I had one for two years before removing it to TTC last year.  It rocks.  No pain going in or coming out and no period for two years.  I'm having it put six weeks after I deliver.  I let a medical student take it out too who had never removed one before and I literally didn't even know she had done it until I saw it in the forceps lol.  The only problem I had was right after it was placed, my husband could feel the strings during sex so I had to go in and have them trimmed off.

It's popular with my female surgeon buddies and we all feel the same ;)

  • I was all set to get it because I hated the nuva ring and I am terrible at pills (and really don't like the hormonal side of the pill). Then I saw the instruments they used to insert it and started second guessing it. I also worry DH will be able to feel it.

Basically, I'm completely undecided what I'm going to do.

  • I've been looking into IUD's as well. In addition to what PPs have said, I think the biggest downside is removal/timing of your next child. My OB advised against any IUD if we were looking to have more kids within 3 years. Since we're both 35 and will likely try for one more, it's likely that we'll be within that time frame. I still need to find out if the hesitation on her part is due to cost (they're supposed to last 5 years and are priced accordingly) or that it's a complicated removal process for such a short time. I really, really want a non-hormonal option this time around though, so will likely try it anyway. I'm interested to know what others thought of this.

  • My sister has the mirena and loves it. She had it after her son and then had it removed to ttc her daugther. She wasn't ready for anything permanent so decided to have it placed again. This post really reminded me that me and DH need to talk about family planning because in May I have my 6 week pp appointment.
  • I didn't have the Mirena, but I had the Paragard for one year before ttc. It was free under my insurance. Insertion pinched for several seconds, and I bled some for the rest of the afternoon (more than spotting, less than a period flow). Removal was a breeze. My H never got poked with the strings.  If the OB doesn't cut them too short, many times they will curl around your cervix after awhile, which mine did. I chose that one over Mirena because it is hormone free, but it doesn't have the lure of the light-to-non-existent periods that Mirena does, I guess.
  • Can't even express how much I LOVED the mirena. Had it for about 2 years (between pregnancies). I had no periods, no hormonal fluctuations, getting it and taking it out was easy. LOVE IT! Highly recommend. I plan to get it again until we decide on a more permanent solution.

  • I had one for about 2 years before TTC and i loved it.  i had a paraguard before the mirena and hated it.  The periods were really heavy with terrible cramping and they were 2 weeks long!  With the mirena i had a slight period for the first few months and then nothing.  The strings curled around my cervix and i never had a problem with them.  I am going to get another one as soon as i can.  My doc said she would wait for at least 8-10 weeks PP and i'm not really sure why but i'll ask at my 6 week follow up.
  • I had one between my two pregnancies an will be getting one in a month. I had it put in at 7 weeks post partum in august 2009 and had it removed may 2011. It never bothered me I only had occasional spotting on wiping and it was worry free. I nursed for a year as well and it didnt seem to affect that at all.

  • I would like to get an iud at my pp appointment, but my dr. says that my uterus may not be compatible. If I can get one I'm leaning towards Mirena.

  • There are two iuds on the market, mirena which contains a synthetic progesterone and paraguard which works by using a small copper coil.  It truly is hormone free.

I had both.  The mirena was the WORST experience of my life.  It lasted 2 months before I begged the doctor to remove it.  Progesterone is what your body produces when you are pregnant so I had all the symptons x 1000 worse than being pregnant.  My boobs grew, I was grumpy, my feet grew, my hair fell out in clumps, and as several people stated the wire poked my then boyfriend to the point he didn't even want to go near sex.

The paraguard worked perfectly with no side effects for 4 years then I started to have VERY heavy periods which is why I had it removed.  Between the two, it's a no brainer for me... I'll never have a mirena again.  But how each persons body reacts to hormones is pretty unique... so it may be right for some people.

  • Due to a previous blood clot, I am unable to have anything with hormones in it so the Paragard sounds good to me.  BUT, I have taken 3 semesters of microbiology and am terrified on biofilms and other bacterial growth.  Any of you other science geeks have an opinion on this?

I do not have an opinion except to say, thanks for giving me another thing to google! Arrrgg...can any decision not be wrought with paranoia?? On another note, I've been meaning to mention that I adore your siggy pic. What a beautiful family.

    Awwww, thank you so much!

Don't freak out about biofilms.  Everyone has them in the form of plaque on your teeth.  It's just that you learn so much about things in classes like microbiology.  I imagine that if it were such a problem, then these devices wouldn't be so popular.  I intend to ask my OB about it at my 6 week appointment but I am sure that is what she will tell me.
