Success after IF

If you had a difficult recovery from LO 1...

Did you do anything different to prepare your body for LO 2? As I get further along I feel more and more fear around what my recovery will be like with DD2. I tore significantly and had a epi...and at my 6 week f/up apt. I remember feeling like I just gave birth. Ugh...I dont like to hurt and that pain was the WORST I've ever experienced!

Re: If you had a difficult recovery from LO 1...

  • Honestly, I have some of the same fears. I had a very difficult recovery from 4th degree tears. My son was born with forceps assistance, and I tend to think that was part of the issue. I am kinda going with the attitude that I will know a little bit more this time, I am pregnant with twins- so I am hoping they are slightly smaller than DS, and I just keep remembering that I did recover from the tears...eventually.

My doctor has offered an elective C-section and at first, I swore that I would be doing that next time around. However, as time passed, I really do not know what a C-section recovery would be like. With this delivery, I am really preparing myself mentally that I may have a very difficult recovery again. I think my recovery would have taken less of an emotional toll on me if I had had more reasonable expectations going into it. The nurses told me I would feel better in two weeks. HA! Two months later I was just beginning physical therapy!

  • I had a HORRIBLE recovery with DS1.  I was sore for about six months and had an episiotomy that would not heal correctly.  The OB that delivered him was a nightmare and I wound up pushing for over three hours (which was not necessary) and so to have an episiotomy on top of the swelling was just not a good combo.

I was scared to death of my recovery with DD. I talked at length with my OB about what we could do differently, etc.  My recovery after her delivery was 1,000 times better.  I had to have another episotomy but I felt normal again within a few weeks.

When we had DS2 I was worried because we moved and I went to a totally different practice.  My OB told me that recovery typically, though not always, gets better because you are cutting scar tissue and there are less nerves, etc.  This time, I had a 1st degree tear and already feel pretty normal at the two week mark.

Good luck!  I would voice your concerns to your OB so they know your fears (I think talking about it each time really helped). I hope your delivery and recovery goes well :)

It took over four years to be diagnosed with PCOS. We TTC #1 for 18 months, did 5 rounds of Clomid and finally moved onto IVF...which worked! Throughout our IF journey, we suffered 3 miscarriages. We conceived both DD and DS without treatment.

  • After a 4th degree tear with DD #1 and subsequent rectovaginal fistula (for 13 weeks and then a surgical repair), I was planning on having a c-section the second time around, even if it were a singleton.  My OB recommended it.  I was more than happy to oblige.  The recovery has been a piece of cake in comparison.

  • Recovery with #2 was an absolute BREEZE compared to #1. I've heard this generally from other moms I know, IRL. The pregnancy for most was much harder, but the recovery was much, much easier.

I was totally dreading it, and it really could not have been easier. If only the baby had slept at night, I would have felt fabulous! Ha.

GL, and try not to worry! :)
