Swaddle weaning question

Maddie seems to have been fighting the swaddle a lot lately, so we decided to try and work towards sleeping swaddle-free. Last night we did one arm out and it went well- I actually heard her wake up around 4:30 and started to get up, but then she stopped making noise and went back to sleep until 5:30.

For those of you that have gotten rid of the swaddle, how quickly did you do it? I mean, since she did fine last night, should we try both arms out tonight, or give her another couple of nights to get used to one arm? She has been napping with no swaddle since she was a month old.

Sorry to be a post whore this morning- I am taking advantage of my well behaved baby :).

Re: Swaddle weaning question

  • We pretty much went cold turkey.  We didn't discuss stopping swaddling- it just happened. We never did partial swaddles.  I think at the end, we might start the night off swaddled and not re-swaddle after he woke up to eat.  I can't remember very well though, because it wasn't really deliberate.

  • The first time we tried getting rid of the swaddle, we did one arm for about a week, then 2 arms out for a few days, then no swaddle.  But we were having issues getting her to sleep well anyways so we always tended to go back to the swaddle if things got rough within a week of breaking her of it.  She has been both arms out now for about a month.  I don't think she really needed it but rather I wanted her to keep sleeping in it for the added warmth now that it's cold out.  As of Saturday, we dropped the swaddle altogether after I got her flannel footed sleepers -- she had no problems getting rid of it.

  • Thanks! Perhaps I am over thinking it a little :). I think we will just do both arms out tonight and we'll probably keep her like that for a while- I like having the extra warmth of the swaddle around her.

  • We stopped cold turkey... but dd was almost 8 months then. Our pedi told us that she would let us know when she didn't need/want it anymore... sounds like that's what Maddie is doing.
  • We swaddled until 6 months, at night and for naps.  It's the only way DS would sleep.  At 6 months we started putting him on his tummy to sleep (which he preferred) and we stopped swaddling then.  We didn't do any kind of transition.

  • we stopped cold turkey too - at about 4.5 months. he loved the swaddle but by morning, he was breaking out of it. so we figured - let's just try without. i thought it would be a disaster but he was thrilled. i think it actually allowed him to learn to roll over quicker because he had more room to move around.

    good luck!

  • We pretty much stopped around 4.5 months when the size small SwaddleMe was too small but the size large was too big and she could wiggle out of it. So we got rid of it.  Pretty shortly after that she learned to roll back to belly and became a tummy sleeper anyway.
