Breastfeeding

How much/often does your 5-6 month old feed?

Im trying to figure out a schedule for pumping once I go back to school. ?My LO will be 5 and a half then and probably started on cereal. ?Just wondering about how much I should pump or if Ill need to considering a shorter class schedule. ?

  • You'll probably want to plan to pump every 3-4 hours. Cereal really isn't enough to impact milk intake and isn't as nutritious as milk, so that won't matter. Most breastfed babies peak at between 24 and 30 oz per day, but that counts nursing when you're together. It's around an oz per hour that you're apart, plus a couple oz. If it ends up being much more than that, your baby is being overfed by her caregiver (usually to keep her quiet).

  • While I'm at work, my LO takes a 4 oz. bottle about every 3 hours.  I BF when I'm at home with him and he eats about every 2-3 hours.

  • I'm an EP'er, so I see how much he gets all the time.  He eats six 4-ounce bottles each day.  I pump at 6:30a, 10a, 12:30p, 3p, 7p and 11p.  I could put my 10a-3p pumps into 2 pumping sessions instead of 3, but with my work schedule it works out better to do it that way and gives me three breaks at work instead of two.
