Phasing out night feeds for my 11 week old?

Hello, my baby is almost 11 weeks but he is big for his age, 14lbs. He eats about 7 times a day, 5oz at each feeding. Right now he goes to sleep for the night between 7-8, wakes up between midnight and 1am for a feeding, and then again betweean 4-5am for a feeding, then he is up for the day between 7-8am.  I really think he's ready to eliminate the midnight feeding. I was wondering if any of you had started phasing out the night time feeds. By phasing out, I mean slowly reducing the amount of formula given, or the amount of time at each breast, and has it worked for you? Any advice or personal experiences are welcome!

Re: Phasing out night feeds for my 11 week old?

  • From everything I've read, 11 weeks is too early to do this or any other form of sleep training - if he's waking and eating, then he's hungry and needs the nurishment.  Waking up twice in 12 hours is great for 11 weeks - that's a really good night for us and DD is 13 weeks.  I don't think there's anything wrong with trying other methods to soothe him back to sleep before offering to feed him, if you really think he's not hungry, but I wouldn't withhold food from him if he's truly hungry.

I second this. My DS is 10 weeks and usually his first waking I'm able to soothe him back to sleep by rocking the bassinet and offering the paci. However, if he doesn't settle down quickly I go ahead and feed him. They are still so little at this point and they need to eat!

I would like to third this and add that not every baby will sttn at this early of an age and its mostly luck of the draw. Unless your doctor was should ne the one to tell you to cut back. You say 14 lbs at almost 3 months? doesnt sound that big... what are his height and weight percentiles? that gives you a better picture of if there is a over feeding problem.

I'm gonna fourth this. Your LO will STTN when they are ready. And just because they do it for a couple weeks doesn't mean they'll continue to do it (says the mother dealing with this right now). :)

  • My lil guy is 11wks, over 14lbs, FF, but he eliminated the 1am feeding on his own. I still take enough bottles and powder upstairs for the night just in case he does get hungry. It is still too early to sleep train tho. Maybe just try a pacifier at first, but if he still fusses, he is probably, truly hungry!

Yep. I'm gonna agree with all PP too. DD1 was 14lbs at that age but she eliminated nighttime feedings on her own schedule. Also when she did, she also started eating more frequently during the day (every 2.5hrs instead of 3), so it's a tradeoff. At this age I wouldn't force anything, but I did get DD2 to eliminate the feeding that DD1 was sleeping through by offering the paci first. She still did it in her own time, but I think that helped encourage things a bit, so that would be the only thing I might try if you want.

  • Ditto everyone else, 11 weeks is too young to eliminate feedings. Your LO will stop waking to eat when they are ready/able. (Also 14lb doesn't have anything to do with being ready/able to reduce feedings.)
