3rd Trimester

failed the glocose test :(

My doctors office just called me and said I failed the glocose test.  I have to go back to take the 3 hour glocose tolerence test.  I am so upset!  I can't believe it.  My level was 169 and they like to see it under 140.  That seems high to me....is that high?  Has anyone else had an elevated level of 169 for the first test and went onto passing the tolerance test?  I've been eating so healthy and not really eating a lot of sugary things. I've never had a sugar problem.  I'm shocked.  I'm so worried that I am going to be diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

Re: failed the glocose test :(

  • Did you have any risk factors to begin with?

I know a few women that didn't pass the initial test but after the 3 hour test, the doctor's ruled out GD.  So try not to stress about it just yet.

  • It's not just sugar you have to watch it is your carbs.

I had a score of 171 and "failed" my 3 hr. I technically passed, but since my nubers where on the higher end and I just barely passed, I had to go to nutritional counceling and I have to test for two weeks and then I will discuss things with my doctor.

I was seriously upset when I found out too, but it really isn't that bad. Once you get your 3 hr results just have a very open discussion with your doctor and have him/her share the results with you and walk you through what they really mean (you will get more our of theat 5 minute discussion than hours of internet searching).

  • I failed my 1 hour really bad it was like 181 and I passed the 3 hour .. good luck .. alot of people fail one hour and pass the 3 dont be too stressed I am sure you are fine!
  • This JUST happened to me. On Wednesday I failed the 1 hour test with a 140. I got the call from my doctor on Thursday who faxed me a prescription for the 3 hour test (She faxed it to me right that second which made me super nervous because of the extreme importance she placed on getting the 3 hour test done ASAP). I made an appointment for Friday. You can't eat anything after midnight the night before your test. I was nervous all weekend waiting for the rsults but today I called and everything came back fine! I was relieved. I thought 170 seemed high too. I heard that anything above 200 is considered gestational diatbetes. Good luck and try not to stress. Everything should be fine! :)

  • My level was in the 150's and I failed but I sailed through the 3 hour test with no problems. The doctor said it all depends on what you eat a couple days before the 1 hour test. Apparently alot of people who fail the 1 hour end up passing the 3 hour.

No, i didn't have any risk factors.  This is my first pregnancy.  It has been perfect so far (don't want to jinx it now though)....  I have been drinking 1 can of sprite for dinner every night.  It's kind of been my favorite drink being pregnant.  I drink water all day long and treat myself to sprite for dinner.  I also crave pasta a lot, and now I am thinking maybe pasta is the reason!  I know it breaks down into sugar.  But other than that, I don't eat sugary things like candy, ice cream, cake, etc...

Don't beat yourself up.  You can't cause GD by what you eat.  It's all to do with how your pancreas is reacting to the pregnancy hormones.  Two people can eat an identical diet and one gets GD and the other doesn't because it's not the food that's the problem.  GL!

  • Don't worry quite yet.  I failed the one hour test with DD2, but I passed the three hour test.  I know several others who have failed the first test but passed the second.  Hopefully, that will be the case for you.  But if not, I am sure you will do awesome either way.

  • Failed one hour test and passed three hour just fine-hopefully it will be the same for you. I have to say, I found the three hour test much more unpleasant. Good luck!

  • Same here--failed 3 hr. by 2 points on 1 of the 4 measurements.  Testing for 2 weeks...almost done w/ week one, and all is looking okay.

It really isn't that bad at all (and I'm a total weenie when it comes to needles), and you become super-conscious of what you're eating.  The main point is to manage the size of LO so she doesn't get too big...I'd rather eat well and deliver normally than not manage and end up with a c-sect!

If you want to pass the 3-hour, I suggest walking between the tests.  Don't just sit in the waiting room.  Walk around the building or something.  I've noticed it makes a big difference in my numbers to be active after I eat, rather than sit and watch TV for an hour.

  • I also failed mine. My doctors office likes it at 130 or under. Mine was a 156. I did the 3 hr today and should get the results tomorrow. I'll let ya know! Good luck to you!

  • My dr. likes to see numbers under 130, and I failed the 1-hour with a 133!  I haven't heard anything yet, but I was really worried about throwing up the glucose drink at the 3-hour test.  I had read it's easier if you drink through a straw, so I made sure to bring one.  Drinking the the drink was tough, but I think the straw helped.  Good luck to you!

  • I scored a 168  on the 1-hour and passed all 4 draws of the 3 hours, so it is definitely possible. Good luck!

  • I feel like everyone who fails the 1 hr passes the 3 hr. Same happened to me. You'll be fine
