Recommend your thermometer

I have a rectal thermometer and a regular one, but the pediatrician told us that they don't really like people using rectal ones anymore and it is hard to take her temp. in her armpit.

So, what thermometer do you have and can recommend?  I am thinking an ear one or something like that may be helpful. Thanks!

Re: Recommend your thermometer

  • My pedi said to take temps rectally as it is the most dependable and this is what we were told at the hospital, too (though they use axillary).  I'm really surprised that your pedi suggested differently.  We have one that the tip can be changed out (rectal, oral and axillary).  I just use the armpit one if I think he's running hot but will use the rectal if I'm concerned its too high and need to call.

  • Yeah, I thought it was odd too since I assumed it was the most dependable too.  But I guess they find that parents are not doing it correctly or something...not that I understand how someone would do it wrong...

They gave us the one we used at the hospital and they showed us armpits.. the odd thing is tho that his armpits both register different temps ( why am I surprised .. lol )  but I picked up some stick on armpit temp ..I think vicks make them.

There is 6 in a pack and can be left on up to 48 hours I think .. we got those just for emergency situations when we think there is a problem and want to keep tabs on it.

  • We have a behind the ear digital (maybe by Vicks?) and we are in the hospital tonight because the damn thing registered 100.9. I know it's not the thermometer's fault that she had a fever but I'm looking for something to be mad at!  Anyway, it's quick and easy. Nothing is terribly accurate but it's an indication. I knew that it could read about half a degree lower than reality so when I saw roughly 101 I figured it was really closer to 101.5 and called the dr.

  • I've always found the rectal temp to be the most accurate.  I have this one and it's my favorite thermometer for a baby...

We do have a temporal artery one for quick temperatures...  https://www.amazon.com/Exergen-Temporal-Artery-Thermometer-Antimicrobial/dp/B0015TIZGQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1333944832&sr=1-2

I like this one, but it isn't always accurate.  But it does get close.

Hope your LO feels better soon  KM...

I can't even hold my cat at the vets when they use a rectal thermometer... I feel so awful. I am pretty sure  LO would have to be showing some real sickie signs for me to jam one up his poor lil ass.... and I would try all other thermometer options first to make sure before doing that to him.

  • We have the temporal one and love it! It's so quick and easy. We've checked it against the doctors temp and it's always been right on.
