Does your LO watch tv?

If so when did they start paying attention to tv?  My sister, my brother and a friend of mine all think it's weird that my boys don't watch tv.  Since these are my first I have no idea if this is unusual or not.  We always have the tv on in our living/playroom but so far they only take notice when there is a cat, dog or baby on the screen and even then they only pay attention for about 10 seconds.  Just curious.

Re: Does your LO watch tv?

  • We have the TV on quite a bit, but DD only pays attention to it randomly.  If there's animals, she might whip her head around for a minute, but she doesn't really watch or understand anything just yet.  The only time I'll put an actual show on just for her is if I need to get stuff done, and then I'll put on Yo Gabba Gabba or Sesame Street.  As she gets older, we'll have to be more careful about what "adult" shows we are watching.  But for now, she's pretty content with ignoring the TV.

  • Yes, she does.  If the Wiggles or Elmo is on, she is about 5 inches away and like a zombie.  That's bad though.
  • Yes, my DD is obsessed and will watch anything animated for huge lengths of time. For better or worse, her concentration is actually impressive. And quite handy, honestly, when I'm not feeling well or she's sick.

DS, OTOH, has only recently become interested enough to sit for any length of time. And he still prefers to play, color, or do other things while watching. He's just not as interested. We tried to take him to his first movie last summer at 3.5 (Cars 2) and he wanted to leave after about 20 minutes. I suspect we will take DD to a movie and she'll do well very soon.

    Kids are all different!

  • Sometimes DD will watch it if I'm making dinner, but on very rare occasions.

  • Emerson sat on the sofa and watched the movie "Up" for 2.5 hours at 13 or 14 months.  She was so content.  I'll never forget it.

The babies (20 months) watch 10 seconds of Sesame Street and are done.   Though, they dig Dora's theme song, too....

  • She likes theme songs. Her favorites are the Wiggles and Chloe's Closet. Chloe really gets her smiling and clapping. She'll "watch" the actual show for a minute and then go about playing until the next theme song comes on. :)

  • Oh, heavens no. The AAP strictly states that there should be NO TV watching until 2, if even that young. What kind of mother do you think I am.

HAHAH. Kidding.  DS will watch bits and pieces of things. He'll bring me a DVD (we don't have cable) and want me to pop it in and then he'll run off and play with trains. lol. Attention span? He doesn't haz it.

  • DD didn't care for TV at all until about 17 months.  She started watching Annie in the car on trips and became hooked. Now she will sit quietly for 30-45 minutes and watch Winnie the Pooh while I cook dinner.  It's wonderful.
  • We have the tv on quite a bit in the background but it doesnt hold LO's interest for more than 5 minutes. He enjoys dancing to Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme song and hot dog dance and a few other theme songs and that is about it.
  • She doesn't care about our shows at all.  Up until very recently, the only thing she would sorta watch is Yo Gabba Gabba, but she would look away at the animated cut always and only watch the main characters. About two months ago, she started watching Seseme Street - still prefers anything with puppets to animation.  She only watches bits and pieces still.  Elmo and Murray are her favorites.  I think Grover 2.0 is hilarious. :)

  • It really depends on the show. They'll sit and watch episodes of Thomas, Super Why! or the Wiggles, anything else is hit or miss. But like a PP said, they love theme music (which is probably why they like the Wiggles, lots of music). They'll stop what they're doing and watch theme songs, then go back to whatever they're doing. Usually it's not necessary though, they play well together so I can generally get small tasks done while they're awake.

  • He only likes certain shows (Yo Gabba Gabba, Fresh Beat Band, Sid the Science Kid - yuck, Curious George, and The Cat in the Hat), and he can sit and watch for about 10 minutes before he runs off to do something else. If there's music and dancing on the tv show, he'll run back over to the tv and join in the dancing though.

Oh, and he'll also watch English Premier League soccer with DH on Saturday mornings, but I think his attention span for that is fed mainly by DH being loud - it gives DS a chance to be loud too!

  • DS2 doesn't watch any, unless he happens to be around when DS1 is watching something. DS1 watches about 30-60 min a week, but some weeks it's less, some it's more. DS1 only started watching videos since DS2 was born, sigh. AAP recommends no TV under two, just tell them that if they mention it.

  • My LO loves the cat in the hat and he watches it only once a day if he does but loves to watch it on the weekends...he has learned a lot of words fromthese shows so i do not think i am a bad mom for letting him watch tv

  • DD only seems to care about Team Umizoomi and Bubble Guppies. Those shows hold her attention for the entire episode. She's just starting to pay attention to Dora. Other than that, she doesn't really care about TV.

Ditto this almost exactly. If we put on a kid show, she only pays attention when there's a song. She effing loves the Thomas and Pajanimals songs.

She's totally uninterested in normal, adult TV. Although the other day my dad had on Modern Marvels or some crap about milk and there were cows on screen and she flipped her shiit. I take her to a local farm every now and then and she loves the cows.

  • DS will plop down on the floor if he hears Dora or Diego. It gives me about twenty minutes to get dinner prepped and in the oven or on the stove so he's not underfoot near the heat.

  • Honestly I'm thinking it might be a twin thing also.  My boys don't watch TV at all and I would be lying if I said I loved that they don't watch it. I would really enjoy some time to get things done if they paid any attention to it.  I think because they have each other and they entertain one another they don't need the TV.  Rarely will they turn around when a song is on or a commercial with some kind of animation.  Other than that they have no interest at all.  I guess it is good in a way but very tiring for me:)

From now on when people give me a weird look about the boys not watching tv I'm totally telling them "It's a twin thing!"  They'll believe it!

  • We don't ever turn the tv on for her. If it is on, it's our show and she will turn for the theme song and that's it. I'm glad she doesn't have interest in it. We dont want her watching tv for awhile.
  • Yup. She would watch The Wiggles and Super WHY all day everyday if I let her. Once I noticed her going into hardcore zombie mode, I started trying to limit her. The TV is usually on, just probably on Toddler Tunes if not Sprout or something I am watching. If I'm not feeling well, I would probably be majorly flamed with how lenient I am with TV. Oh well.

  • We only really have the TV on when DS is watching something, which is rare. He much prefers a stroller or wagon ride or playing outside to TV (for now). However, after breakfast in the mornings he does enjoy a little Elmo on Sesame Street before we go to daycare.

  • Yes but she also has an older sister who watches TV. I'd say the only thing that really holds her attention though is Signing Time DVD's.

  • No, he doesn't pay attention, but I also can't stand kid's shows so don't really try much. He doesn't pay attention to regular programming though when we have it on in the evenings.

  • Yes, she pays attention to adult TV (most often my husband's talking heads shows) unless I do something else to distract her.  I have never shown her a kids' TV show because I don't want her watching them yet, but judging from her reaction when "The Simpsons" comes on,  I am assuming she would be rapt.
