dayquil while breastfeeding

So I caught a little cold/bug and have the sneezes, mucus drainage, and a scratchy throat. I was wondering if I could take some dayquil(I want to avoid nyquil since I have to wake up every 3 hours).

Main ingredients are acedaminophen, dextromethophan HBr, and phenylephrine HCI.

The box says to ask health care provider before use if pregnant or breastfeeding. So it doesn't say I CAN'T, but I'd like to avoid a call the the after hour nurses for such a small question if I can.

  • I hate to tell you this, but I was told I couldn't nurse my DD1 until 8 hours after I took the medicine to make sure it was out of my system.  Hope you get to feeling better.

I was afraid of that. But I made it through an even worse cold med free while pregnant, so I'm sure I will survive.

  • The  phenylephrine HCI is a decongestant and might screw  with your supply. I'm not sure that one dose would screw up your feedings though, but I have no idea. I would take some ibuprofen and guaifenesin (plain Mucinex) to find some relief. Either way, I hope you feel better.

Not all decongestants will decrease supply, Psuedoephedrine can but Phenylephrine does not.  This Kellymom page has good info about BF and cold meds.
