Trying to Get Pregnant

Foods/drink to avoid during 2ww?

Hi everyone-

I'm new here, and I have a question. I'll try to stop in and do a real intro in the next couple of days.

Should I avoid the same foods I would avoid during pregnancy during the 2ww? I test on the 17th. Even if the egg was fertilized, the embryo doesn't share a blood supply with me until implantation, right?

So, do I need to stop eating fish, deli meat, and all of that? Do I need to completely abstain from alcohol, or would a glass of white wine every couple of days be okay?

Re: Foods/drink to avoid during 2ww?

  • You don't need to abstain from anything in the 2ww.

These don't even need avoided, if handled properly, while pregnant.

and you only need to avoid excessive caffeine and ibuprofin during the 2ww.

  • Who told you that you have to abstain from fish during the 2WW or pregnancy?

You can eat fish and deli meat while pregnant, so why avoid them when not pregnant?

    Alcohol is your call.

    All of this.

This.  I was about to say the only thing I did is switch from Advil to Tylenol, even though that's not really a food/drink.

  • I didn't mean that I wouldn't eat fish at all, but I am citing these sources and their recommendations to limit seafood and to avoid some altogether:

That second link talks about why you shouldn't eat deli meat (or smoked fish, or soft cheeses).

My question wasn't really about what foods to avoid during pregnancy, since there are a lot of sources out there for that, and I don't want to clog the message boards with those questions. Really I was wondering about how things might be different during the 2ww than after implantation and during pregnancy. How, for example, would alcohol, or lysteria, or advil for that matter, effect the embryo before it implants?

I'm really willing to do whatever I need to do, I just like to know why I'm doing it. You know?

  • ibuprofin and caffeine can affect implantation.  People don't like to drink during 2ww because during that period, baby does implant, therefore what you do, affects baby, even if baby doesn't share your blood.
  • Good to know about the caffeine and ibuprofen. I actually gave those both up as soon as DH and I started TTC.

Oh thank goodness...all that wine and tequila with dinner wuz delish.

There is a better chance that I will gain the ability to reach through the internet and smack you than there is of you catching listeria in your life, let alone while pregnant. Almost all cheese in the US are pasteurized unless you go looking for some that aren't. That scare is from the early 80's and was limited to queso blanco. Deli meat/hot dogs is the late 90s. You better avoid cantaloupe after last year. I don't see that on your scare tactic list. While you are at it, add bagged salads, milk, and chicken (those are from the last 10 years).

And there are 4 kinds of fish to avoid, and they aren't commonly consumed unless you are a big seafood person.

I'm not sure why you're yelling at me. I'm trying to avoid contact with lysteria because two good friends of mine were advised by their ob/gyns to do that within the past year. I am aware that I only need to avoid unpasteurized cheese, but there are unpasteurized varieties of brie, feta, blue cheese, and goat cheese at specialty stores and in restaurants. I just want to know what to avoid during the 2ww. And yeah, I am a big fish person actually. So that's something I'll actually have to limit.

I'm not trying to scare anyone, I'm just asking questions.

  • I guess it's just your tone. Stuff like "I don't see that on your scare tactics list," or "God forbid someone point out that there are holes in the logic of what you have read." Are you trying to be funny? It comes off as hostile and rude. I appreciate that you are giving me answers, but like I said early on, I don't like to just take what people say as truth. I like to know what they are basing their opinions on.

Thank you for the link, it's really helpful.

All of this. The thing about "soft cheese" really bugs me--it is so fear mongering. It is illegal to sell unpasteurized soft cheese in the US. The only "raw" cheese that can be sold in the US must be aged at least 60 days. And to even find aged raw cheeses it's pretty tough. You usually have to get them straight from the farmer (or farmer's market). Any cheese you buy in a store is perfectly fine by USDA and OBGYN standards.

Who is yelling? IF I WERE YELLING IT WOULD LOOK LIKE THIS.

You asked questions. You are being given answers. God forbid someone point out that there are holes in the logic of what you have read. As for the fish, https://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/fishmercury.htm. I lied. It's 7.

Everyone should try to avoid listeria. It's not fun. But acting like it's going to kill you is ridiculous. Do you realize there are women that think avoiding soft cheese means not eating the "cheese" on nachos from Taco Bell?

I agree with Willow28, it seems like you're the one who's overreacting. She was just asking if the same general things to avoid while pregnant should be avoided during the 2ww, which I think is a legitimate question.

In addition, I checked out the link you provided re: fish and I'm not a 'big seafood person' to use your words, but I regularly eat swordfish, which is on the list to avoid entirely.

Does anyone else know if Advil and caffeine are the two biggest things that affect implantation and should therefore be avoided? I didn't know this and have been using both while TTC!

No, there aren't. Those vendors would be violating the law if they carried them. And from my experience, people who deal in homemade/raw/artisan cheeses take that law very seriously. They're livelihoods are at stake if they don't.

With that said, I see where you are coming from. There is a lot of stuff in the media and mainstream prenatal care that perpetuates these recommendations. However, before you go cutting things out of your diet when you get pregnant, I'd suggest doing some more reading about how each of these foods act in the body and how they are produced and packaged in the stores.

I'd recommend The Complete Organic Pregnancy as a starting place and then also anything by Nina Plank.

  • I'm glad to hear that it's illegal to import unpasteurized cheese (not because I necessarily think it's necessary, but because now I don't have to think about that. :-)).

I'll check out the book you recommended, LiteraryFoodie. Thanks.

  • My ob recommends staying away from deli meating because it is full of sodium, not because germs.
  • who doesn't like nitrates?
