Dog owners- Rec. your dog's collar (NBR, obviously)

Good morning, all!

Well, Jovie's collar finally broke this morning, so I am on the hunt for a new one. She is a Siberian husky, two years old, and about 45 lbs of solid energy.

This is the fourth collar she has broken in a year. She slips out of everything, and when she does, she runs. Looking for recommendations on very strong collars, or if there are any types that others have had success with for dogs who pull like there's no tomorrow.

Have you ever purchased a martingale dog collar? We have a very active Airedale Terrier - she used to slip regular collars all the time (and PULL). We got the martingale at the reccomendation of another friend and it's been wonderful!!!! She hasn't ever been able to slip it. We also took her to training classes and she heels like a champ! I would highly recommend!

ETA: You can purchase at any petsmart/petco. Or of course, Amazon! GL!

Get a gentle leader. It goes around the dog's nose and then around their neck. It doesn't exert any pressure on the neck and if they try to pull it turns their head back.

Yep, that's the kind we had for her. It does a great job of not letting her slip out, but she broke it (the fabric part). Maybe it was just a crappy collar.

We also have a behavior trainer for her. She's just difficult. Haha.

Have one of those also, but right now it's too hard to get on her in the morning when she has to pee (She does. not. sit. still.) This is when the collar breaking happens. She still needs one that has her info on it too in case she runs (one that can't slip off).

Gah, why do I have such a difficult animal?! Haha.

We have a 120 pound Bullmastiff and just use a regular collar but have a harness for walking. Even my 60 pound son can walk him this way.

I use a martingale with chain for my beagle. From my understanding, there is no difference, but the sound of the chain tightening is supposed to help the dog realize the collar is about to get tighter so they stop pulling. It doesn't work with my dumb mutt ;-)

We also use a harness that tightens under his front legs if he pulls. It makes walking him easier, but he still pulls like a mofo.

We use a "regular" martingale that we bought at Petsmart. I'm assuming your issues are coming from pulling, not from chewing.We found that the combo didn't allow our girl to pull as much as she used to.

ALSO one of the things we learned with her (in regards to the pulling) is as soon as she would pull, we would "turn her around" and start walking in the other direction. We did this for about 10 minutes (3 times a day) for a week and after the first week, the pulling had majorly susided. We continued and within a month, she was almost pull free! It was like she was cured from the heavens above! She still pulls occasionally (like when there is something she has just GOT to smell), but she heels like an angel now - especially when we take to her petsmart, home depot, lowes, ect. GL!

We use this on our corgis when we walk them. They get too excited and pull too much on the first 10 minutes of the walk, and I started to grow concerned of them hurting their traquea (sp?). Plus they always found a way to get out of neck collars if they wanted to unless you had them way too tight.
We've used the gentle leader on my oldest too and he learned pretty quick to stop pulling with it.

Yeah, this harness is probably well suited to his big, broad chest and may be why it works so well for him. I could see it not being suited to every breed. If this hadn't worked, we were going to try the Gentle Leader next.

Yep, pulling. I think there might've been a problem with this one getting wet and being cheaply made. That's what I get for buying the cutest one!

DH and I have been trying the turn around thing forever...we are beyond normal training for this dog. We have a trainer come to our house every other week to work with her because she is impossible. It did work with my other dog though!!

The gentle leader did wonders for my other dog (75 lb shepherd/husky mix). She walks like an angel.

We have an 80lb Lab that pulls like crazy on a normal leash. We started using a gentle leader 4 years ago and I'd never try anything else. He has a regular collar for his tags, but we always use the leader when we take him somewhere.

I never thought about using a harness to stop pulling. I have a miniature schnauzer/poodle mix and she pulls like there's no tomorrow (all 16 lbs of her lol). I'm definitely going to look into this!

Oh Duh! I think my text was misunderstood. My traquea concern was with the neck collar. The harness doesn't hurt them. They still pull but we can control them better. And they are 30 and 35 pounds. I'd say the harness works on any size dog.

That makes sense. We were worried about the regular collar hurting his throat too.

They make the martingale style which he hasn't been able to break or escape from in the 7 years I've had it. The collars are also guaranteed for life even if your dog chews through it.

I agree with the gentle leader. We use it on our 50 lb border collie/chow (Abby) and it works well.

I understand though if she won't sit still to put it on. Sometimes Abby doesn't like to sit long enough for us to put it on her. She gets way too excited about going outside.

My dog is a 14 lb shih tzu, but I use a harness. Shih tzu's have short noses and problems breathing sometimes so I got it so It doesnt choke her neck, but I think it would probably be good for stability on a big dog too
