Possible allergy/facial rash help

When DS was 6 months old, he developed a rash around his mouth that I had attributed to teething. Since then, it has intensified in waves, or lightened off and on. At the onset there were no new foods introduced for at least a week. Since then he has had plenty of other foods and no other type of reaction. The past month it started to creep across his face and behind his ears. Since drool doesn't go there I thought allergic reaction, and removed the most logical allergens (wheat and eggs) to no real change.

Does this sound like an allergy and if so, what should I do to find out the culprit? I have found no correlation with any specific food and an intensity. I now monitor his foods much more closely than I did when the rash first started.

I should also add that DS has a pedi appointment in two weeks, and I'll ask for his opinion then.

Not much to offer except that my dd's eczema (which is linked to dairy and possibly wheat) began just on her cheeks and we also attributed it to teething drool. Then it spread, and spread, and spread and we knew we had to look at other culprits. Good luck!
