baby movement for skinny vs. meaty mamas

I've been seeing everyone talk about how they can feel their babies from the outside, and even see them... and I can't do either! I definitely had some tummy padding before the pregnancy - what does everyone think? If you have less fat, do you think you'll see/feel baby from the outside earlier?

  • I'm not sure - I know that an anterior placenta can block movement, but I don't know if a little extra fat impact your nerves. I definitely have some extra padding on my stomach and I felt him kick from the outside around week 21 or 22. I didn't see it until two weeks ago though.

  • I started feeling outside movement around 24 weeks and saw outside movement at 25. I definitely had a little extra tummy pre-pregnancy.

  • My pre-pregnancy BMI was 22.something and I saw my first movement from outside sometime last week (22nd week)

  • I am thin and did not feel much of anything until 22 weeks. I do have an anterior placenta, which could be part of the reason.

  • Maybe it's a second time mom thing, or maybe I'm just a freak of nature, but I started out about 20lb overweight AND have an anterior placenta, and we've been able to feel outside movement for 2-3 weeks now!  Just starting to be able to see the belly dance this week.  I do grow big/strong babies (DS was 9lb7oz and this one is starting to measure big too), so that might play a part in it.  I certainly wouldn't worry that you're not experiencing it yet though.  Movement is just another one of the many parts of pregnancy that is different for everyone!

  • I'm not really sure how much it has to do with seeing or feeling from the outside.  I'm a bigger girl (about 95lbs overweight according to all those lovely charts), but I've been able to feel movements from the outside for a couple months.  I just noticed that I could see my stomach move when he kicks last night.

  • I'm about 150 pounds overweight and I have an anterior placenta.

    I've felt consistant movement since 21 weeks, and have occasionally felt her kick from the outside since about 24 weeks.  DH has yet to feel her, she stops when he puts his hands on my stomach, and I have not seen my stomach move.   

    BFP on 1/27/11 - EDD 10/7/11 - M/C on 2/21/11 @ 7w3d
    BFP on 11/3/11 - EDD 07/6/12 - DD born 6/27/12 via c-section 
    BFP on 1/31/15 - EDD 10/9/15 -- Beta #1 @ 17dpo: 394, Beta #2 @ 20dpo: 1604 (35 hour doubling time!), Beta #3 @ 24dpo: 5287
    1st ultrasound 2/19 6w6d - strong heartbeat and measuring perfectly!

  • I am meaty and I can't see movement yet. I just started to feel it from the outside last week.

  • I have some extra cushioning around my middle.  I can definitely feel baby moving around inside, but cannot see it yet, and I'm at 27 weeks.
  • "Normal" weight pre-pregnancy here.  I am sure baby is moving around vigorously enough that I should be able to see him, but the places where I feel the movement outside are not exactly the most comfortable to sit and watch for movement.  I can feel him moving and so can DH so I am satisfied with that.

    I have heard that thinner people will often feel movement sooner.

    I am thin and DH and I both started feeling movement on the outside around 18 weeks, but I think that's really early.  I was shocked that he was able to feel the baby kick almost as soon as I was able to feel inside kicks.

  • I was pretty thin pre-pg and although I can feel movement now, it was much later than everybody here on the July board, and I can't see anything. I don't remember, my sister being to see anything when she was pregnant. I'm sure there are a whole bunch of factors at work - the postion of the baby, the elasticity of the skin, the density of the muscle. Most off the movements I feel are low, so I wonder if I can't see anything because it's all taking place on the underside, where I can't see.

  • I had normal bmi prepregnancy with little belly fat. I have a long torso and an anterior placenta. I was starting to see the kicks from the outside about the same time that I began to feel them. That was all about 3-4 weeks ago.

    I don't think the anterior placenta is doing much to keep the outside action from happening, it just delayed my ability to feel the early ones from the inside.
