Ridiculous question involving a psychic

Hi ladies,

Let me just say upfront that I know I may come off as a crazy person in this post, but this situation has been on my mind lately and I'm curious about your thoughts.  About a month ago, my friends and I threw a bachelorette party for my friend, but since we're all in our mid 30s now, we wanted something different than a night of partying or clubbing. Instead, we did a spa weekend and we booked a psychic/ tarot card reader to do a group reading for all of us.

Now mind you, I've never been a  believer in astrology and have never put any stock in it. BUT, when this man was doing everone's readings, the stuff he came up with was unbelievable. He had incredible insights into very personal situations going on all with all of us.  It was mind-blowing.

When it was my turn, he started off by saying some pretty dead-on things about my family, which had me hooked. Then all of a sudden he starts talking about my uterine wall being a damaged. And my lining isn't damaged,  but it is on the thin sixe. He said I will need medical assistance to get pregnant (but not surgery) and that it would happen, but not until the Fall.

I'm going forward with my plans (IUI #2) this month and will continue go down the treatment course,  but part of me wonders if it's just not in the cards for me right now.

The only good part about the reading was that all my closest friends were right there, so I feel like it took a bit of pressure off for them expecting something would happen imminently.

It was just such an odd experience.... How would you ladies feel about a situation like this? Anyone had anything similar? Or should I just try to get it out of my head?

Re: Ridiculous question involving a psychic

  • I don't not believe in psychics but I wouldn't put too much weight into what they say.  I got my hopes up a bit when my $10 psychic reading told me I would get KU in March (well actually at the time I was incredulous that it would take that long) and even though I knew it was stupid I was disappointed when it wasn't true.

I don't know much about detecting problems with your uterine wall but is this something you've had checked out already?  Would a lap be able to detect a problem?  Is your lining thin?

Anyway I don't think I would stop treatment but maybe thinking it's not going to happen until the fall will help you deal with potential disappointment between now and then.

  • I had a psychic tell me out of no where that I would be pregnant very very soon (she thought I could have been pg currently), with a boy. He would be a singleton and would be conceived naturally, NOT with IVF. She said all of this completely out of the blue with no knowledge that I was even married or TTC or anything. (The moment she said "not in vitro" I burst into tears and the cat was out of the bag at that point). I did tell her after the fact that we were planning on doing IVF next cycle and she said not to count that out.

This was 2 cycles ago when I was at the end of my 2ww of my 1 and only IUI.  It was a BFN and AF was right on time. We also had a natural cycle after that before I started BCPs for IVF, it was also a BFN. While her prediction was initially impressive because of all the details, it was wrong, and we are now doing IVF.

Don't change anything you were planning based on a psychic.

  • Funny you mention this.

My stepmother went to a psychic earlier this week. The psychic told her that she sees a baby soon for a female named Chris that she is close to. My name is Christin. My stepmother never mentioned anything about me to the psychic. I was creeped out by this... but hey... I'll take what I can get :)

  • When we were in Salem last October - DH and I each saw a Tarot reader for fun.

The one I spoke to told me we would absolutely have a child - but with medical help (and that point I didn't even know we would need to do IUI).

  • I wouldn't let what the psychic said change your plans. Like the previous poster said, maybe it will help you deal if you do get BFNs though. I saw a tarot card reader about a month ago and she could not have been more wrong about me. She got everything wrong and I mean everything! The same person read my friend just before me and my friend could not believe how dead on she was. I was pretty disappointed but it was still a fun night out anyway. Good luck to you!

  • Yeah, I definitely am not going to alter or change any plans based on it, but I guess it'll always just be in the back of my head.  And  I definitely agree, it may make the BFNs a little less harsh.

The psychic said a boy in the Fall who would be born in the summer, so I guess time will tell. In the meantine, I'm moving full steam ahead with my RE's plans.

  •  am a believer in the general existence of psychics and psychic phenomena, but it is usually very hard for me to believe in any particular psychic. Someone who is talented at cold reading techniques can be really impressive. Also, once you know someone's general age, ethnicity/culture, where they live, and their social group, there are a number of things they can guess accurately at based purely off of statistical likelihoods.

People want to believe in psychics, even if they say they don't believe. A cold reader doesn't have to hit the nail on the head, he just has to get close. Kind of how you took his statement about a "damaged uterine wall," and linked that up with "kind of thin lining." Not at all the same, except that they both have to do with uterii, but filing this under "close" allows you to give more weight to his other statements.

Cold readers also say general statements that are likely to be true for many people, like "I sense a rift in the family" or "I see children...are children important?" They then gauge the person's reaction/response, and take it from there. I say again, good cold readers can be REALLY impressive. To the point where, despite their denials and explanations of technique, people insist on believing that they are psychic.

I like Tarot, and find it useful for looking at issues with a fresh perspective, but it is NOT useful for specific future predictions like "you will get pregnant through ART with a boy in the fall." It is most useful for examining the influences (past/present/future) on your situation, and at best, the cards will show ageneral idea of where you are headed if and only if you continue along the same path. So these specific predictions come from him, not the cards.

Just for kicks, let's run with the premise that we believe in psychics, and that he actually is a psychic. I have known a few people who truly believed themselves to be psychic, and they (like most psychics) would be the first to tell you that it isn't an exact science (a convenient statement for the fake ones, too.) Visions/intuitions can get muddled up, mixed up with other truths, or misinterpreted, and are often rather vague to begin with. Not only that, but the future (as they see it) is not set in stone. Just like with the Tarot cards, changes you make can alter the path of what was seen. (Also, it bears mentioning that my psychic friends were only dead on accurate a small percentage of the time. Most of the time they got close, or it was "oh, I thought that lemon I saw meantthis, when clearly it had meant that." Or they were flat out wrong.)

I f I were you, I would be impressed by your psychic's cold reading skills, and I would be hopeful that he did have some actual psychic ability and caught an accurate glimpse at a successful pregnancy in your future. Even if he was for real, though, "a fall pregnancy/summer baby boy" is a little too specific to be reliable, and I wouldn't give it much thought. (From a "he's a fake" standpoint, predictions for "the fall" are a lot safer...you will tend to consider his statement a success if you get pregnant any time from late summer to early winter. If you got pregnant in late spring/early summer, you can also say that he was right, he just got it backwards.) So, in the end, I would hold on to the happy idea that someone who calls himself psychic saw you with a baby, but I really wouldn't put much stock in the specifics of how that happens.

  • I haven't done psychic reading recently after TTC, but I think it's amazing how they can tell certain things about you and I hope your BFP comes true this Fall.  If it doesn't, you can think that as one of the fun stuff you girls did for the Bach-party, right?

I have a friend, who claims that if she dreams about someone dying, the person gets pregnant.  She swears that 3 girls got KU after she had a dream about them dying.  She texted me back in Feb saying "Congrats, looks like your Valentine Day will be special b/c you died in my dream!".  Sure, I got KU b/c I died in your dream.

Oh well, it's so hard to predict what kind of future is waiting for us, but I am still hopeful...

  • I had a reading done prior to seeking help TTC. The psychic told me that I would have problems, but all I would need is a pill and that she saw twins. It was a very neat experience. So far I am only taking Clomid so fingers crossed that this is the pill I need.
