Two issues

Hey all!  I hope that everyone is having a good week so far.  I have two questions for you all and they may even be related...not sure yet.  First one, my LO loves to eat.  Everything I have read about solids says to have them eating 1/3 of the baby food container for breakfast, lunch, dinner...however, my LO is out of control.  He eats almost the entire thing for lunch and dinner.  I am not forcing it on him.  When I stop he still has his mouth open and is upset when I take it away.  Is this a problem?  Does anyone else's LO eat this much?  Also, he seems to be having a harder time with pooping now so I was not sure if all of the solids he is eating is causing constipation?  Any advice, suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  TIA!

Re: Two issues

  • 1 - You're not over feeding your LO. At this age, they eat until they are full, so if he wants more, I say go ahead and give him more

2 - Have you tried upping his water/BM/formula intake? My DD is also having a harder time pooping now that she gets plenty of solids, but I do notice a difference when she drinks more during the day

    HTH!

  • Babies will let you know when they are full.  I have never heard of that "rule" about eating 1/3 of the container.  DD eats the whole 3.5 oz container for breakfast with 2 tbsp of barley cereal, and for dinner she will eat 3.5 oz of a veggie with half a container of fruit.  I definitely do not think you have a problem on your hands. :)

As for the pooping, DD's poop has definitely become more solid since starting solids. (haha)  Remember, though, that having a harder time going is not constipation.  I regularly see DD pushing, grunting a bit, and her face gets red, but she's not constipated.  Is your LO truly constipated?  As far as I know, their BMs will be different now that they are eating more foods, and that is normal.

No, I have not tried this yet.  But thank you for the idea....and for making me feel better!

  • Uhm...my DS ate a 6 oz jar of chicken and stars, 2 oz of oatmeal with pears, THEN on top of that got excited when he saw my brocolli and tilapia and ate some of that, and this was just dinner....and he isn't overweight and still ate 24 oz's today ;-)  I say you're fine

  • When LO started making small, dry pellet like poops, I added another 4 oz bottle and he has been fine ever since, so maybe try that is he is FF. If he is BF and you are nursing all you can, maybe some water?

  • I have a little guy, he's only in the 7% for weight and height.  With that said, he had maybe 2 weeks where the 2oz. containters of baby food were enough.  He now eats at least 4 oz. of baby food twice a day and then cereal with his morning bottle.

Your LO will let you know when they are full.

  • We have a crazy eater as well. I still don't think he drinks enough for the day, so we're trying to find ways for him to get more bottles. Otherwise, he does a full stage 3 container for lunch and dinner, a bit of finger food if we have some prepped for him and even a bottle after that. When he's done, he starts playing. We also noticed we had to rush things out of his sight or he'd get mad it was over. He could be full and still whines when we clear his tray. With bottles, we have to hide them immediately and shake them out of ear shot. He's a crazy eater.

As for the poop, it's normal for them to go through changes as they try new things. We do water or juice mixed with water during meal times, and that seems to keep him regular. I also keep prunes on hand so he can stay regular.
