What size comes after 5T?!

Why am I so confused about this? DD is really tall, so 5T doesn't fit her anymore and she is moving up to "girls" sizes. But when I buy girls 3-4 (or XS), it's too small! So does that mean she's a girls 5-6? Please help! I have no idea why I'm finding this so difficult. TIA!

Re: What size comes after 5T?!

  • It depends on the brand. I think in most cases a boys/girls size 4 or XS comes after 5T. I just bought DS new tops yesterday but the boys XS I bought was a 4/5. DS is tall but very skinny so when it comes to pants I only buy adjustable waist and buy up a size if the lengh is off. Thank goodness for shorts season, he can still wear 5T shorts.

  • 4T is basically the same as a 4 girls (some brands have a slight measurement variance to allow for diapers in the 4T). Size 5T is the same as 5 girls. Etc. So if 5T's are getting to small on her you want to try a girls 6. :)

probably a size 6 or girls small.  I think the regular size 5 can be a little bigger than a 5T but not by much.  Also realize that one store's size 5 may run smaller.  I've always found CP to run smaller than Carter's for example.

  • Like PP said. Usually depends on brand but 6 is the best. When my daughter was in 4t from Walmart I compared them to the big girl's reg 4 was a little wider but not by much. I know only buy TCP (The Children's Place), she is tall (3' 10") at 4 but waist wise can fit a 4t waist. She wears 6x/7 in dresses, 5/6 in shirts, and 5 in pants. Hopefully that helps with your LO.

  • Ha! you are not alone with being confused.  When i was shopping last month at Kohls I asked another women that was shopping what size to buy.  DS is in 5-6 in boys.

DS is in 5T now but The Children's Place did not have size 5T available online in pants so I ordered a child sized 4 and they fit perfectly.

  • It depends where you shop but for the most part, if your child is in a 5T, when they move to the girls clothes, she will be in a 5 or a 5-6 or a small.  It goes in order from the toddler to the girls sizes.  My older DD wears mainly size 5 or 6 topsdresses and size 4 or 5 bottoms (I don't buy the toddler sized since the pants leave room for a diaper which is the only real difference.  DD#2 wears a size 4 or 5 top/dress and a size 4 bottom.  My girls have short legs and are tiny but have long torso's so its a royal pain to buy for them right now - so happy shorts season is just about here as crop pants, shorts and summer dresses are so much easier!  And you can still buy pants with the adjustable waist in this size but the skirts tend to not have the built in shorts so I bought a bunch of biker style shorts for them to wear.

  • After 5T, we went to 6s (or smalls), then 6x, now starting to move to 7.

  • Typically, after 5T comes an XS in most stores.  At Old Navy, for instance, at 5T and an XS are pretty much the same, give or take a few pounds for weight or a few inches for height.  I can do either for DD there.  However, at The Children's Place, she has to get an XS because their size 5 is too big.  Even at Target, I've kinda pushed myself out of the toddler area and into the girls' area because their XS fits my daughter perfectly.  Carters' has cute items for little girls and I buy a 5 for her there; Ralph Lauren has cute things, too but because they run small, I never buy for the next season because there's a bigger chance for my daughter to outgrow them quickly.  For any other store, I use their size guides for a reference and match up my daughter's proportions and the majority of the time things fit as they should.

  • Isn't it crazy how clothing a child can get a little too complicated sometimes? Ever wish there was an easier way? Well something is actually already in the works aimed towards helping anyone with a child in their life pick out the correct article of clothing on their first trip to store.
