2nd Trimester

U/S Vent...

So my next appointment is May 12th. DH is deploying the following week and won't be here for the birth. I just called the Dr. to see if we could do an U/S and, fingers crossed, find out the sex. I'll be 16 weeks so it will be a close call. Well normally with the Military and insurance we have they won't do the anatomy u/s until 22-24 weeks...I called hoping that in my case they would let it slide and they would help us out....the first girl I talked to said normally they won't do it early but said I had to call a different number.....so I called that number and the woman there, who wasn't very friendly, said that the other girl gave me the wrong number and I needed to call another number and they're closed til Wednesday. Neither of them sounded hopeful. I called DH to let him know and he sounded so upset. I really hope Wednesday they tell me we can do an U/S...it would make things so much better! But if they tell me no, I'm thinking of just asking the Dr. when we're there...maybe she'll be nice and understanding and at least look!

**Edit**

I know 16 weeks can be too soon to tell!

Re: U/S Vent...

  • I hope you get one. My DH would be upset too! It would be so neat if your DH could see the LO before he left and hopefully find out the sex. I hope everything works out.

  • I would just go to one of those private ultrasound places and pay for it so you can be sure your DH can be there for one.
  • When I went in for back pain, I asked if I could have a u/s (at 11 weeks after I already had one at 8 weeks) and the doc could tell that a u/s would really calm my fears and did it with no problem.

I thought about going somewhere and paying for it but what if we are unable to tell the sex? Then it wouldn't be worth it.

I think they let you come back and try again if you dont get results.  You should look into it.

No offense, but this could happen at the Dr. as well - but you think your insurance should pay for it? I can totally understand wanting your DH to be able to see the u/s, but if it's that important, pay for it.  Plus, from what I have heard, a lot of those places will let you come back (for free) if they can determine the sex at the time of your appointment. I would think just having him SEE an ultrasound is more important than seeing what the sex is on the ultrasound.

My DH is also in the military and couldn't be here for the big u/s - we did an extra ultrasound at 17 weeks and they were able to tell us the sex then. Good luck!

I guess it would depend on when we would go then...I really don't want to do it any earlier than 16 weeks and I'll be moving right after he leaves.

I guess we'll see what happens.

    Thanks for the positive thoughts!

I agree 100%!! Your doctor may not even be able to tell that early or if the baby doesn't cooperate...

Our baby didn't cooperate at all at the 20 week u/s.....and Dr said no to another one unless medically necessary - so I scheduled a FREE one @ the local community college. They do them  to give students actual experiance, so I'd check around and see if anyone near you has one of these programs. I'd never heard of it until I complained to a friend's wife and she told me about it.

I know that it could happen at the Dr's, and I know that 16 weeks is early, I said in my original post, fingers crossed because I know it could be too soon to tell. We have seen the baby and of course seeing the baby again before DH goes will be wonderful. But we will have very little communication while he's deployed and he won't be here for the birth. Wouldn't you hope that you could find out as well?

That's unfortunate that they wouldn't do another one for you. I have heard about the colleges doing it and I've been looking around at the colleges around here. Thanks!

  • Just an FYI, even if you can get the u/s, 16 weeks could be too early for a definite boy/girl answer. Their sexual organs are not fully developed yet. My friend had to have an u/s at 15 weeks and the tech said it looked like a boy. At my friend's 20 week u/s, it was most definitely a girl.

I too would schedule my own at one of those 3D places, so you can get as clear a shot as possible.

    GL!

  • I hate to sound bratty, but I cried (genuinely upset) the two weeks before my big U/S and the doc felt so bad that she wheeled the machine in and did it with me. She gave me an 80% chance its a boy... this was confirmed by the time the big one came around. So not saying to be a brat necessarily, but it might work. :)

lol..thanks for the advice! The Dr. was really nice last time and when she couldn't get the heartbeat with the doppler she brought in the U/S machine and we just watched the baby for a few minutes! So I think she may work with us! The people at the desk/on the phone, just weren't very helpful or friendly.
