Temper tantrums?

My SIL watches DD 2 days a week for me. Everyday when I pick her up, SIL tells me how her day was and tells me about he behavior. Lately DD smacks the spoon when you try to feed her. She throws her food off the high chair onto the floor. When you try to correct her and tell her no she screams and cries. SIL thinks this is the beginning of a temper tantrum and that I'm going to have my hands full with DD. Does your baby act like this? Do you think this behavior is normal for 10 months? Whenever my SIL says something to me I feel like I get defensive and I say she's only 10 months! She's a baby!

My DS does this also, and he just started crawling.  My understanding is that LOs are finding and exhibiting their independence at this time.  Eating is not the excitement of the day it previously was either.

Yesterday, DS would only take formula and he barely had anything to eat.  I just smiled and went with it.  Today, he's eating better.  Who knows what tomorrow will bring?  My feeling is that they'll eat when they're hungry.

I swear it seems like DS throws tantrums. He gets so angry some days. I really hope this goes away. Especially the screaming. We are flying to Florida next month and I really don't want him screaming on the plane.

Yup, we're getting some temper tantrums now.  For instance, she'll grab the bottle of teething tabs then when I take them away, she'll flail backwards and let out a dramatic cry.  They're just learning to test boundaries and figure out how to communicate their wants/needs to us.

We basically go with redirection or ignoring with the temper tantrums now.  I either take away the thing she isn't suppose to have and give her something else or leave her on the ground where she's crying and move a few steps over and start playing with something else.  Within a few seconds, she's back up and crawling over to play with me.  As for when she starts throwing food or batting at the spoon, mealtime is over then.  I just say "All done!" and wipe her up then take her out of her chair.

Temper tantrums at this age don't mean that you're going to have a "hard time" with them later.  It's a natural thing to start trying to figure out how to communicate and then getting frustrated.

    ^^ This!

They are learning to communicate their wants and needs.  It's hard to do that when you can't talk.  It's not indicative of the future.

I think every day will bring new challenges and changes.

Thank you ladies. I wrote this before checking out the 9-12 month board and there were some posts on there about temper tantrums. When DD gets mad I never know at this age if I should just ignore it or tell her no? I don't want to over use the word no! I hope this stage passes quickly and I get my sweet baby back!
