Anyone having problems getting child to wear sandals?

I bought DD a bunch of different sandals, from pink athletic ones to white, brown and black dressier ones. She refuses to let me put them on her feet. We try to say how pretty they are, how we want to wear them (to make her want them more), even trying to put them on with socks on.  She screams no and cries when they get on.

Any tricks?  She's obsessed with socks and tennis shoes and never even wants to be barefoot except at night.

I just know that Sunday we're going to have her in a pretty Easter dress and socks and dirty tennis shoes:(

Re: Anyone having problems getting child to wear sandals?

  • Could you just get her dress shoes for Sunday? That's a battle I'd probably chose not to fight. Getting DD OUT of sandals in February in Upstate NY, that's a battle I'd fight.

  • Pretty socks w/the sandals?

My DD is the same and we just kept at it for a little while and then, eventually, it worked.

This is a good idea!  Get some ruffled or lacy socks and put them on with the sandals.

My DD loves being barefoot but she's happy in shoes too.  I've had trouble putting her sandals on her lately because they don't just velcro, they have an actual clasp.  While I'm trying to do the clasp as quickly as possible, she's wiggling, saying it's tight, etc.  I kinda wish I had just gotten velcro ones (even though these are so pretty).

  • Violet always adjusts better to these things in new settings. I know that probably sounds bad bc we are basically tricking her, but it has worked with us for many things. (On vacation last summer, she started taking the sippy and ditched the bottle, for example.) We put her in the car seat shoeless one day and before we unbuckled her and took her out, we put sandals on her and she ran around like a mad woman at the park. Worked like a charm and she doesn't hate the sandals now. She loves them, in fact and gets pumped to wear them, it seems. (They are strappy and rainbow colored. ha)

  • I am not above tricking my child:)

I'll try again with the socks and sandals, but she wouldn't even go for that yesterday.

  • Well, I'm someone who hates sandals, flip flops or anything that involves the possibility of getting dirt/soil on my feet (yes, I'm a weirdo) I'd wear them if I "have to" but I don't like it, so I sympathize with your DD

I'd get her dressy closed shoes and wait a few months to give the sandals another try

I don't know if it gets super hot in Italy, but if it does, do you still wear socks and tennis shoes?  It's going to be 100+ easily all summer and I feel bad for her if she wears socks and bulky shoes everyday.

  • Keens? They are the only sandals my kids will wear for more than 2 seconds.
