I posted this on the May 2012 board a while ago, but I was wondering what you ladies thought. DD is getting to pick Alien's name. His father and I have ceased communications after some dialogue I felt was intended to bully, threaten and hurt. Not good for pregnancy.
My parents were separated when my sister was born, and my mother let me pick her first name. I thought DD would like to do the same.
We've decided to go to the hospital with three names and see what he looks like. We have two so far:
Henry Morgan (we both have a love of pirate lore)
Damian Salvatore (My daughter loves the names together, but I'm vaguely concerned with the simularity to Damon Salvatorre of Vampire Diaries fame...then again, being associated with Ian Somerhalder isn't a BAD thing. *drools*)
One of the earliest names we came up with is Alistair Declan but it makes the list, then falls off, then makes it, then falls off. So, I'm not sure on that one. My father thinks Alistair is a bit pretentious.
Re: The Pressure of a Name
Makes perfect sense. Ever know someone you couldn't stand? Totally ruins a name for you. In my case, it's Aaron...and my family was pushing Henry Aaron so they could call him Hank Aaron.
For DD, it's Corbin. We both liked Corbin Dallas (ala Fifth Element) and she hated that kid she went to school with named Corbin...ticked her off even more, I think that she couldn't use the name because she always thought of him.
We like pirates, and kicked around all sorts of pirate names.
I LOVE Mass Effect. It is the best game series I've played. Unfortunately, Mass Effect 3 seems to be where Bioware choked. Theyre long games, about 30+ hours each, and 29 hours of Mass Effect 3 are amazing. The last hour ruins the entire series. It's THAT bad. If you're new to the series, it's just a bad ending. If you played all three, it's horrible. Bad enough that Amazon and GameStop were buying open games back for full price. Bioware have said they are working on a new ending, so I would wait for a while before playing it. In the mean time, play Mass Effect 1. This is my favorite game of all time. My daughter plays on 360, me on PC. My bump Avatar is a picture of my Commander Shepard. When I finished playing Mass Effect 1, I immediately started playing again with a new Shepard. When I finished Mass Effect 2, I started Mass Effect ONE again with a new Shepard to carry her through ME1 and ME2.
Note: they're RPGs, so they aren't games you'll finish fast. Unlike any other game, playing the first and second are important. Decisions you made in the first impact the 2nd and 3rd. Choices you make in the 2nd affect the third...especially of they contradict something you chose in the first...like who to romance. You can certainly play ME3 without ME1&2. You'll just enjoy and feel it more if you do play the first ones.
If you like Fantasy, Dragon Age: Origins is BioWare's best game. It is simply perfection.
I love Henry Morgan!
I tried to talk the H into naming the baby Henry but he doesn't like it for some odd reason.
THanks so much for the info. We are gamers in my house too and we are just finishing up skyrim (my son my husband and me!) and I know the DH will want a new game for his birthday in June. We have been seeing the previews for Mass Effect 3, and I know he and my son are both super interested, but I really like talking to someone with knowledge of the game before purchasing. THanks again! Jess :-)
oh and thanks for the recommendation on Dragon age!
::former pg35 lurking here:: I like Henry Morgan too. Like you, I was single while pregnant, and let my DD pick out my son's middle name. I love, love, love that you are doing that!
I think that is awesome, to let your DD pick out the baby's name. At this point, I wish we had another kid that I could rely on to pick a name - DH and I can't seem to agree on one!
I like Declan but Alistair is NMS. Names are tough!
Oh, if you played Skyrim, you'll love DAO. It's not open world like Skyrim, but it's so indepth it's insane. I think I spent 70 hours on my first run, and almost 100 on the second. It's a definite LotR knock off, but it's the best one I've seen done. IDK how old your son is, DD is 15, but I let her play ME at 13 and DAO at 13. The games are rated M for a reason. Advantage to being a gamer Mom...I can QA the game first. She's got BioShock. There's more nudity in a Victoria Secret commercial, and more violence on an episode of...say NCIS. More gore in CSI. It all depends on what you'd let him play/watch. The scores for Mass Effect and Dragon Age are fantastic!
I Like Henry Morgan. I'm not a fan of Damian though, never have been. I had to LOL when you mentioned Corbin Dallas though. I happen to be a fan of Declan, I threw that one out to DH for a possible middle name for DS but he wasn't buying it. Now he says he never had an issue with it. lol.
Good luck! I like the idea of having several names ready at the hospital then deciding the final choice when you see your LO.
