Talk me off the ledge

Hi everyone,

I'm about 5.5 weeks pregnant, and have been experiencing light (brown) spotting for the last three days.  I put a call into the on call Dr. in my OB's office yesterday and she said though not necessarily "normal", its common and that I shouldn't worry too much because if I was going to mc it would probably happen quickly (progressing to a heavier flow within 24 hours) not be light spotting for three days.  Still... this didn't really make me feel better.  I called my actual Dr. again this morning to speak with her/see if somethings going on and am waiting on her call back while losing my mind.

Has anyone else experiences this and it let up? As I said its very light but its got me beyond freaked out.  This is my first pregnancy so I'm hoping I'm just very paranoid.

Thanks in advance!

  • I had three days of very light spotting at around five weeks. It's scary but I'm still here. Fingers crossed that it disappears soon.

  • Yep. I've had light brown spotting for a little over a week now, and the Dr said it's completely normal. I even went in for an exam and another beta, and everything is perfect :) Don't stress about it. My sister and a few good friends each said they had it for awhile and they all have healthy babies! As long as it doesn't turn red, you're most likely okay.

Spotting is very unnerving!  Your doctor is right, sometimes it can be a sign of a problem, but it is present in a lot of healthy pregnancies as well.  Brown spotting is old blood (possibly from implantation), and not as worrisome as red blood accompanied by cramps.

For what it's worth, I've had the same thing on and off for the last week or so, and my u/s this morning showed a healthy little bean.

  • I told my dr at my first appointment that I had some spotting on and off for the past few weeks. She said that brown, pink, and even red spotting was normal and didn't even ask which kind I had. Everything I've read says spotting is totally normal. Make sure to rest and stay hydrated, but also RELAX and don't stress about it. Especially if it's not progressing and becoming a flow or anything. If it does, just call your dr and go from there.

  • I just posted this same question on another board! I had light brown spotting on/off yesterday and today, am 5w4d. My nurse said 3/4ths of her patients have brown spotting, and that it is totally normal and nothing to worry about- as brown means it is old blood making its way out. She advised to drink lots of water & take it easy until the spotting subsides, and as the other ladies said, if it turns red and/or is accompanied by extremely painful cramps, that would be the time to call your doc. Most likely everything is absolutely just fine! But like you, it freaks me out and I hope it goes away soon!!

  • I had brown spotting from 5 weeks 2 days that turned to red bleeding at 6 weeks 6 days, then returned to brown spotting.  I had an u/s today and baby looks great, measuring 2 days ahead with a hb of 164!  I have a subchorionic hematoma, which is the reason for the spotting and bleeding.  From what I have seen they are fairly common.  Hoping that's the case for you!
