Formula fed baby and blowout questions

DD is formula fed and is eating Enfamil newborn. She only poops every other day and it is A LOT. We have a blowout every time. We moved up to size 2 daipers to see if that would help and it did once. We tried Pampers and now are trying Luvs. Any tips on how to keep the poo in?  It comes out top and sides(such a mess!)

Also I can't decide if I should maybe try another kind of formula to see if she will poop everyday or at least not have it be as runny. She is not fussy at all but she is a laid back baby so I am not sure if it is upsetting her tummy or not.

I just am at a loss for what to try to not have these blowouts every time. TIA!

Re: Formula fed baby and blowout questions

  • We like Enfamil Gentlease. No blowouts so far (knock on wood). DS is way less gassy on it than he was on Enfamil Infant or Similac. I think the broken down proteins also make it easier to poop. Maybe it would help you, if it made your LO poop more frequently. Then maybe it'd be less likely to be a blowout every time if she went more often. Also, for diapers we use Pampers - either Swaddlers or Baby Dry. I actually like the Baby Dry best. GL!

  • If you're open to the idea, cloth diapers are generally better than disposables at containing blowouts, since they have real elastic in the waist and legs. The only blowout we've had was one of the very few times DD was in a 'sposie.

I guess I have never thought about cloth before. Is there any website or anything that tells you where to start or what you would need to get started?

I'll try the gentlease formula to see if that makes a difference. Thanks!

  • Idk about your formula question. But generally anytime you have blow out means your diaper is too small, at least that is what I have found with DS & DD.  I would move up a size, that way it will contain all of it. Also I found that the Target brand diapers worked well for DS, they seemed to be somewhere between pampers and huggies, but very absorbent.

It's got a lot of good info. The FAQs on the CD board are also helpful.

They're not for everyone so feel free to completely disregard all this, but they are working great for us.

I will second this. Love our cloth diapers. It feels good to know that we aren't putting all those chemicals on her bottom or adding sposies to the landfills. Plus you can really save money on cloth.

  • I am another cloth lover. We have never had a blowout, and the oniy leaks were because we made a mistake when putting it on. GL!

I could have written this, with just one exception - we had a blowout (out the front, back and sides of the diaper) two days ago. It was one of the last of the NB size diapers that I was trying to use up, and I really think that's the reason why.

DD poops 1-2x/day. We are also using the Enfamil Gentlease and put Mylicon drops in the bottles - poor girl was just so gassy.

For diapers, we use Size 1 Pampers Swaddlers during the day, and Pampers Baby Dry at night (she will sleep longer using the Baby Dry).
