Preemies

Peanut butter? Eggs?

When did you introduce peanut butter and/or eggs to your preemie? According to the pamphlet from my pedi, they want you to wait until age 3 for peanut butter! I think that's crazy. I've also read that there are TONS more nut allergies than there used to be and it's because children are introduced to it so late. We have no known food allergies in our families. I was just curious when you guys introduced those things to your LO.

Thanks!

Re: Peanut butter? Eggs?

  • The AAP suggested to introduce a taste of PB as early as 1 year. But just a taste, watch for reaction and have benadryl at the ready. My pedi is a D.O., very natural medicine kind of guy. We gave Sam scrambled eggs at one year, 9 months adjusted. He loves them and had no problems with it. We have no allergies in the family.

I'd check with LOs pedi, but I would never wait until 3. That's probably why there are so many allergies now a days.

  • And when I first read the title to this post, I thought of Reese's peanut butter eggs. Now I have a craving. ;)

  • I've done eggs without problems.  I think it was around 11 months actual.

Haven't done PB yet.  I plan on waiting until 1 year adjusted.

  • I introduced eggs a couple of weeks ago, so around 12 months adjusted.  I started to give her peanut butter the other day and then I freaked out and didn't do it.  I use to watch a child with a life-threatening peanut allergy so I'm paranoid.  Our pedi said she could have anything we eat just to watch for choking hazards.
  • We just sort of go with it - he was doing fine with other foods and no allergic reactions (or history of it in our families) so we've tried both at this point. Eggs were pretty early - 8 mo actual? We're BLW so he didn't start solids until 6 adjusted and we did eggs that month. PB we tried out about 6 weeks ago. Gave him the tiniest taste, then waited to see if there was a reaction - tried again a few days later - a few after that. Now he eats PB on crackers and sandwiches as part of his regular diet. The only thing we haven't tried is honey.
