Safe to lose weight during 1st tri?

How safe is it to try and lose weight during the first trimester? I have a little fat in the areas of my legs and midsection that I would like to trim down and lose the extra fat before the baby weight comes in. I'm not over weight but feel it would be better to lose the extra fat now. What are your opinions or advice on the topic? I would just be tryin to be more active and be doing running/ jogging and walking to burn the fat off.

  • You shouldn't start a new routine but it is fine to continue an already existing one.

  • Like the PP said, its ok to continue anything you were doing, but consult your doc before starting anything new. Not sure how far along you are but if you are like me (not one of the lucky ones)and will be experiencing that beautiful pg symptom of morning sickness, you will be losing weight simply from not being able to keep anything down! Good luck!

  • I'm 5 weeks, I've always been active just always off and on, wanted to stared regardless since I was pregnant jusf to be healthy. Nothing serious maybe just even walking a lot. But I have done Crossfit and running so I wanted to maybe incorrportate those in moderation and in lower intensity or what I feel would be safe.( as far as Crossfit goes)

  • I had the same question, so I talked to my doctor and to the owner of my Crossfit box about it (after seeing four different women continue to rock the WOD up through their 8th month!). As PPs have said, if you've been exercising regularly, continue to exercise. Otherwise the safest thing is to talk to your doctor about the most appropriate exercise routine for you now. GL!

  • I also agree that if you were previously exercising prior to getting pregnant it is okay to keep that up.I don't suggest picking up a new exercise routine in the beginning of your pregnancy. I am a runner and when I got pregnant I was told it was okay to continue to run as long as I felt comfortable. I personally didn't feel comfortable running so I did the elliptical at the gym until I was 7 1/2 months. It helps shed the baby weight afterwards to keep up with some sort of exercse regime.
  • Definitely don't pick up a new exercise routine if you haven't been doing it already. When I spoke to my doc, she said that just being pregnant increases your resting heart rate (mine has increased about 15 beats per minute) so when you work out, your heart rate increases higher than normal as well. When your heart rate gets really high (such as for intervals and fat burning) then more blood is needed to pump through your body at a faster rate, thereby possibly taking blood and nutrients from the baby. If you're already exercising, then your body has a lower resting heart rate and a lower work out heart rate and is used to the effects of a regular work out. I'm probably not explaining this as well as she did... when I found out I was pregnant, I was training for my first half marathon so my personal decision was to stop increasing my mileage and run anywhere from 3-6 miles with no intervals and some hills.
  • I'm in a similar position. I spoke with my doctor about my weight and exercise and she told me that she doesn't want me starting anything too strenuous (she joking said "I don't want you to start training to climb mountains or anything") but I can work out however I want, as long as I feel good.

You don't want to push yourself so hard that you can't carry on a conversation while working out (decreases oxygen to the baby), but other than that, working out is fine. My doctor also said that losing some weight is ok, but I should focus more on a total weight gain of about 15 lbs with this baby. So, I intrepreted that, as, I need to work to control my weight so that any pounds I do put on are only from the baby, not from any extra I am putting on myself.

In my particular case, over working out has never really been my issue, hence the extra pounds I need to drop! ;)
