Story behind your baby's name

I know some baby names are just cool names that we read or heard, liked, and decided on.  And then there are some names that have a story behind them or were chosen for a particular reason.

So for those of you who are the latter, what's the story behind the name you've decided on? I love to hear these stories. Care to share?

Re: Story behind your baby's name

  • We named our first child Abigail, because of the Abigail in the Bible--a woman who stood up to her husband and acted with tact and bravery to save her entire household.

  • Our daughter is Leah Hazel. She is named after my mom and my great-grandma

Our son will be Owen Christopher. His middle name is my H's name and the first name has no meaning.

i wish i could be joking but my dad is the music teacher at a church so he owuld be mad. we had sex, all the time how bad i know but we dont want to wait and he said GREAT OH KAY! and I was really feeling the wets? down there- too embarsed to say- but he acted like man.
  • Our baby's name is going to be be Corban Lee.  Corban comes from The Bible, meaning "an offering to the Lord".  His middle name is "Lee" same as my husband's middle name.  Both hubby and son will have same initials "CLC"

  • We chose Abigail for our LO because, honestly, we love NCIS and Abby is our fave! And we chose Jeanne because it is DH's Grandma's middle name.

  • DD1 is Isabella Elizabeth.  The first name I just loved and the middle name is my middle name and my mom's first name.  After she was born we found out that Isabella was my great-great grandmother.

DD2 is Kaiya Jean.  Kaiya in this spelling is Japanese, a country and culture I have huge passion for.  I love Japanese names, but wanted something that wasn't too ethnic sounding.  Jean is DH's grandmother's name.

DD3 will be Gwendolyn Audrey, Gwen for short).  Both are my grandmother's names and if this LO has half the qualities that either of them possess, she's going to grow to be a very strong, but compassionate lady.

  • Our DD is Eliza Leah :)

I first heard Eliza watching the TV show Little House on the Prairie (one of our favorites) and loved it. We looked up the meaning and loved it more - it means either "joyful" or "pledged to God".

Leah is my middle name, and also my mom's middle name, so if we had a daughter it was a non-negotiably one for me - luckily DH likes it and it sounds good with her FN!

We had the first name narrowed down to Eliza and one other name, and didn't decide before we met her. A  few minutes after she was born, DH and I were alone with her and he asked me which name I wanted... and all I wanted was for him to name her, not really having a preference. So I said to her, "Shhh, listen, your daddy's going to tell you your name!" He looked freaked out for a second, but then he leaned down and whispered "Eliza Leah" to her :) It was suprising b/c all along he'd been saying he liked the other name better.

    I love her name...

  • Our daughter is Lauren Harper. I have loved the name Harper for years... Lauren is after my DH's grandfather who he's really close to. The sucky part is, he's on death's bed in the hospital, and might not live long enough to meet her- even though our induction is scheduled for Monday- but I'm hopeful!

  • When we were talking about names for DD1, I told DH that I really wanted an interesting and unusual, but not made up name for a first name and a family name for a middle name.

DD1 is Shiway Elizabeth. (Shiway is pronounced SHY-way)  Shiway is the name of a friend of a friend and it means "little flower" in Mandarin.  Elizabeth is after my MIL.  We really struggled to find a first name that we agreed on.  The minute DH suggested Shiway, the struggle was over.

DD2 will be Sadie Lucille.  Sadie isn't necessarilly unusual, but DH and I were at his parents' house and FIL was talking about some of the genealogy research he had been doing and he was telling a cool story about some great-great-great grandma and her service in the Navy, etc...At the end of the story, he mentioned her name, Sadie, for the first time and DH and I simultaneously shot this look at each other.  Hours later, when we were alone, he asked if I was thinking what he was thinking.  We both were thinking it was a great name for any future DDs that we had.  (We weren't even TTC at the time.)  Now, we are expecting a girl and plan to name her Sadie.  Lucille is after my mom's mother, who died when my mom was ten years old.

  • No story behind my daughter Jaidyn's name.  I just thought that it was beautiful and had never heard it before.  Now the name is everywhere.  As for baby Preston, my husband's last grandfathers name was Preston.  He passed away about a month before my husband and I got married.  We were there by his side when it happened, and it really bonded my husband and I, as well as helped me to bond with his family.  He was a wonderful husband and father, and a great Christian man.  We couldn't have picked a better person to name our son after!

  • Our little girl will be Mackenzie Collins.  Mackenzie is just a name that we loved and really doesn't have any special meaning.  We chose Collins for her middle name, since it was my mother's maiden name and I wanted to use it in memory of my grandparents who I was very close to and have passed away.

  • We are having a Willow Raine. Willow is my husbands grandmothers first name. Raine is short for Lorraine which is my grandmothers name and my late aunts. My aunt died 3 years ago when she had a heart attack in her sleep. She was 49 years old and she helped raise all of the nieces and nephews in the family. She hated the name Lorraine and had us call her Raine. So thats how we came up with Willow Raine but it was before she passed away.

  • We are team green so we have chosen a boy and girl name. Our boy name is James Patrick. James is my husband's middle name and is after his maternal grandfather. Patrick is after my paternal grandfather whom died shortly after I was born.

Our girl name is Elizabeth Kathryn. Elizabeth is my sister's middle name and was a take on my maternal grandmother Emma. My mother's name is Kathryn. While I prefer Catherine, I want to keep my mother's spelling of the name.

We like traditional names and liked the idea of using family names. We certainly considered other names and having only one family name ie either the first or middle name, but as it turned out we preferred the family names. I also liked Elizabeth because of the biblical significance. She and Zacharias were childless for many years before they finally had a son. This spoke to me as it took us 14 months and a miscarriage before we conceived this child. We had a battery of tests done and everything pointed to unexplained infertility.  I had to rely heavily on my faith during this time and learn to let go of the control over conceiving. As an extreme type A personality type letting go of control over anything is not easy for me.

  • We chose Nicholas b/c it's just about the only boy's name we could agree on.

We chose Ivan b/c my husband is Croatian. We wanted a Croatian middle name. However, there were absolutely no Croatian names that we could agree on. My husband's middle name is Marijan. Yeah, no way I'm doing that to my boy. We just decided to give him a Slavic middle name instead. Ivan is Slavic and it's also my husband's grandfather's name.

  • Our DD will be named Julie Marie, after my DH's mom that passed away right before I met DH. He asked in passing when we were dating once if I would consider this and I said yes. His little brother and aunts are 100% behind this name and think that our little one will hopefully act like her name sake.
  • We're on Team Green so we have 2 names lined up.

Girl- Her middle name will be Jolie. Both my husband and I are Haitian and are fluent in Haitian Creole and French. We wanted to use a French or Creole word in her name. Jolie was the only one we could agree with. It means "pretty" in French.

Boy- His middle name will be Reid. I'll be completely honest. I love Criminal Minds and Agent Reid is my favorite. Luckily, my husband liked the name and it flowed with the baby's chosen first name :)

  • We're pregnant with #2. Our first daughter is named Isabelle Joy - we liked the name Isabelle & Joy is a family name plus a song about a little girl that my boyfriend loves. Our second daughter will be named Eleanor Ruth - Eleanor originally came up while listening to the Beatles & Ruth is another family name. What sealed the deal was apparently there were two English queens named Isabella and Eleanor - they had very cute similarities and we loved the story.

  • Team Green as well,

For a girl- Megan Frances, Megan being the combo of my mom and DHs mom, Margaret and Peggy, and Frances is my middle name, my moms middle name and my grandmothers first name.

For a boy - Joshua Anthony Harrison. (I know 2 middle names are tough but neither of us will give one up) Joshua was somewhat out of the blue as we couldn't agree on a first name, Anthony and Harrison for my grandfather and DHs dad.

  • DS is Henry, after the greatest one-shot Simpsons character ever, Hank Scorpio. His middle name is Michael, for my brother who died from cancer in 2006. This one we think is going to be Caroline Victoria. Caroline is from one of our favorite Tullycraft songs, Secretly Minnesotan. Victoria we just like. She was almost Lorelei, because we're huge Gilmore Girls fans- we got hooked on reruns when DS was a baby.

  • DD will be Magnolia Mae, and we've been calling her Noli :)

We chose it because we love southern-sounding names, and wanted something unique without being made up. We also loved that one of her nn's could be Maggie- my mom's name is Margaret, and she goes by Marge now, but when she was little, everyone called her Maggie. We thought it was a sweet round-about way to honor her.

  • We decided to name our son after DH because we had always wanted the first born boy to be named after him. Then one day I decided to look up the meaning of his first name and found out that it meant "Gift from God" or "God has given" which was perfect and meant even more to me because I had such a hard time getting and staying pregnant. So he definitely takes after his namesake and I hope he continues to do so. I can say the same for my DH as well.

  • Our DD's name will be Anja Jolene. Anja was just a name I loved, and DH liked it enough to agree on it. Jolene is the name of a Ray Lamontagne song that means a lot to us both. We'll call her AJ, because we think it's cute.

  • The original name I wanted for a girl was Isabella Cecelia after both out grandmothers. Unfortunately, Isabella is beyond popular and neither Dh nor I like using popular names. We don't want 5 more more little girls named the same thing as our daughter in her class. Sooooooo..... We chose Daphne Laurel. Kinda a nod to Greek mythology. Dh is really into anything Greek.

    https://www.pantheon.org/articles/d/daphne.html

We had other names we liked as well, but again, they were/are way too popular for our liking. We each had more names we liked individually, too but none that we both agreed on but this one.

  • Jude after the song Hey Jude, it's always been my families theme song, the background of every home movie and has had such an impact on my life that it was perfect for my son :)

  • Lillian Virginia

Lillian was a name we both just loved and also happens to be DHs God mothers name. Virginia is my late grandmothers name and we were very close.

    Lillian April 17, 2012
  • Our daughter will be Melody L?a.

We picked Melody in honor of my mom who passed away about 2 years ago. Her name was Marti, but she swore she would haunt me until the day I died if I dared name her granddaughter that, so we were to just use the 'M.' My mom was a huge music fan, so when I thought of Melody, it just worked and was what we knew would be her name. DH and I also love music and have put a Beatles lyric over her crib :)

L?a is an Icelandic name (DH is Icelandic). We wanted an Icelandic name so we would not have issue there, they actually have a naming committee that has to approve of names. I picked this one because the L?a is a bird that represents the coming of spring, light and joy, which is what she is to us. Also, DH's name is another Icelandic bird (Orri- the bringer of war) so it is a nod to him as well.

  • Zachary is the name of my brother who died a few days before his 16th birthday when I was 12.

    Ryan is daddy's name.  : )

  • We are naming our son Henry Robert. Henry after DH's grandfather and Robert after my dad. It feels nice having the names of people who mean so much to us like they are protecting our boy. Family is really important to both of us

  • We chose Harper b/c every time I read the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" it reminds me of the stories my Granny would tell me of her childhood, and makes me feel close to her. DH and I picked it years ago as a way to honor the bond my Granny and I share. It is especially important for us to have the connection to her now b/c she passed in February.

Ellen was chosen b/c it is mine and my mothers middle name. All of our kids will have family names for the MN's.

  • Baby A will be Baden (rhymes with Caden) Robert.  Baden Cook is the name of an Australian cyclist and my husband was a big cyclist in college.  Robert is after my husband's grandfather.  Baby B will be Nolan Charles.  Nolan is one of the only names I liked that my husband didn't hate and Charles was my grandfather's name.  We will be putting their names in letters over their cribs and then a framed picture of the grandfather they are named after under their letters.  I like to think of it as the grandpa's watching over them as they sleep. :)

  • Our DD's name is Kenyon Solar;  it is our mothers maiden names.  We wanted something different; yet normal sounding that was not very popular.  For our DS we are going with Sebastien Hunter.  Sebastien is my husbands uncles name and Hunter is my maiden name after my father who passed away in May.  Again different but not popular.  My husband is a jr. and he absolutely refuses to name our son the third and I was in agreement.
  • Our DD is going to be Emily Patricia.  Emily is the name DH and I liked the best but has no special meaning and Patricia for my Grandmother who I was very close to and died 5 years ago.
  • DD1: Addily Anne; I loved Addalyn but too popular so shortened it and LOVE it! Anne after my mother.

Twin girls not sure which is which yet will be:

Aria Nicole; Nicole is my middle name

Arilyn Elaine; My great grandmother was an incredible, strong woman and her name was Marilyn, I thought taking the M off would be a more modern twist on an older name. She also raised my mom since my grandma was 16 when she had my mom. And Elaine is MIL's middle name.

This is my first post but I just could not resist this topic! Our little girl will be named Krislyn AnnMarie. My sister in law is Kristi Lynn and both of us are super close to her and she is does not have any children. Ann is my sister, cousin and grandmother's middle name and Marie is the middle name of both of our moms and my other sister! Although she will probably be called Krissy...or so our son says!

  • Our last name starts with "V" so we wanted another "V" name for the alliteration in her initials and we could call her V.V. as a nickname. Came to find out that a great-aunt on my DH's side is named Vivian as well so it ind of conveniently fit. DH's name is Alexander due to serious complications during his birth that he overcame. It means "the conqueror". So to honor him we gave her the female version of his name for her middle name. I really wanted Iris as her middle name for my grandmother who passed in 2006, plus it would make her initials V.I.V., another nickname she's already accrued, but DH fought for Alexandra because it made him feel special haha.

  • When I was in 5th grade I read a book in which one of the characters was named Imogen, and I kind of never forgot the name since (even though I never heard it in real life and for a while didn't know how it was supposed to sound). Then I discovered Imogen Heap and fell in love with her music, so I started to really like the name too... I'm definitely not saying that DD will be named after either the character or the musician, but that's where the idea started and how it became more solidified. I love that it's actually an old Shakespearean name and apparently far more common in many other English-speaking countries than the US, but so rare here that it appears unique. I also like how it sort of sounds like the word 'imagine' :)

  • Ella Kay

Ella - was the name of my cabbage patch doll that I got on my first birthday! That doll was my first 'baby' so it seemed fitting that's what I name my first real baby!! Plus I think the name is super cute :)

Kay - my husbands mothers middle name. She passed away when he was13 and we wanted to make sure she was still a part of our little girl. This meant a lot to Dh and his family :)

  • My daughter "Michelle" is named for the First Lady. I am still amazed that there is FINALLY an African American First Lady in the White House, and she's beautiful, extremely intelligent, and asserts herself. While I may not agree politically with everything Obama does, I think his family is beautiful and it's refreshing to see a black family in a positive light instead of all the negative crap we get all the time. I'm sure my daughter will ask where her name came from, and I want her to know that she is named for an amazing woman.
