I won't do it until my daughter is old enough to ask for it. I got mine pierced at 7 yrs and that was about right I think. I was old enough to mostly take care of them myself. It doesn't bother me that people do it on kids younger though.

I really think it depends on your culture more than anything else - I am hispanic and it's TOTALLY normal and expected for girls to get their ears pierced at around 6mo age - but a lot of other cultures wait until the girls are 16 (or whatever age they seem to be appropriate) - to each their own.
It drives me banana sandwich when I see infant baby girls with earrings and those overly huge flower headbands on their heads. I feel like the mom is just playing dress up. Besides, getting my ears pierced with my mom and sisters when I was younger was such a memorable experience for me - I would hate to steal that from my little girl.
My sister and I got our ears pierced when we were 6. My Mom said she waited until we asked so she took us for our birthdays (we are 6 years apart). Anyways I would wait until my daughter asked and if I thought she was ready I would take her. I wouldn't do it as an infant though.
Not until she's able to care for them herself. I got mine done at 10 and I had terrible infections b/c my skin is super sensitive. Meanwhile, my sister got hers done at 8.

Yes! I got my DD's done at 4 1/2 mo's. Every other girl in my family has gotten it done around that time also.
Not until she's old enough to ask for it and to take of them herself. I got mine done at 8 and I was fully responsible for taking care of them. I also will take her to get it done at a legit piercing studio, and not gross Claire's, but that's a separate issue.
I don't have or see a problem with infant ear piercing. My neice got here done last week at 7.5 months and after my sister did a ton of researching learned that the best infant time frame is 4-6 mos.
I had mine done when I was older. They ended up crooked because I was a kid that couldn't sit still. Now I'm 30 years old with 2 holes in one ear (I had second holes done in college) and another ear with 3 holes because the first one never closed up and I routinely use it on accident and then can't tell if it's the right one or the crooked one.

Word. This is a good policy. I think I was 16. Maybe older. My little sister got hers pierced at 13 because she begged, and my mom asked if I wanted to get mine pierced too. I had never thought about it, but did it anyway. So I'd wait until they asked, and weigh that against whether or not they were mature enough to take care of their own ears.
I would wait until she was older tweenish and asked. I'm not a girly mom I have my ears pierced but never wear earings. I think it is cute on babies but just not my style.
If it's a girl I am taking her when she is a baby, about 5 months or so.
I remember dying to have them when my friends did (like kindergarten). My mom took me, and I cried and cried because I was so scared. Also, I was old enough to take care of them, and I didn't; The back of my earring grew into the back of my ear. In hindsight, I don't know why my mom didn't check, I'm sure I lied and told her I was or was apparently doing it wrong. And then I tried to hid it from her because I thought she would be mad at me. Ahhh to be 6yo again
My mom asked me if I wanted to get my ears pierced when I was 4 (I remember this entire conversation including setting, dialogue, etc.) I didn't even know what she was talking about, but I did say yes. I remember hearing the earring gun when they pulled the trigger, but the only thing I felt (probably cause it was cold & wet) was the rubbing alcohol they used beforehand. My mom used my ears being pierced as a way to teach me about taking care of things. If I wanted my ears pieced I had to take care of them or my mom would take the earrings out.
I have no daughters -yet- so I have not experienced this as the parent. I will however probably ask my daughter around age 4. And I will explain the process to her if necessary. I think I'll also use it as a teaching tool for taking care of things just like my mom did.

If it's a girl I am taking her when she is a baby, about 5 months or so.
This and adding I did my daughters when she was 5months, because she was little she didnt bother with them and I was able to take care of them correctly. She recently wanted another hole in her ear and she was awful with looking after it, I had to push her to take care of it everyday, she ended up taking it out....

If it's a girl I am taking her when she is a baby, about 5 months or so.
The only thing I'd caution you on is the ear lobe growth... my friend got her ears pierced when she was six months old and now her holes are really uneven. They are both really low and kind of askew. I also know someone else that had their daughter's done when she was really
young and now her her holes are way too HIGH on her ears. I guess when their lobes are that tiny it's kind of a crapshoot as to how they'll look on full-sized adult ears.
If I have a daughter I plan to pierce her ears when she's 4-6 months. I have many friends who do it and they have mentioned a lot of their pediatricians do it in their offices.

If I have a daughter, I will wait until she asks for them. However if she is anything like her mother, she will have a jewelry addiction from a young age and start begging at about 2.5.

Personally we won't be doing it until she is old enough to ask for it herself. It looks cute when I see a baby with them, but no need putting holes in a baby's ears just to make them look girlie. I think it would be something fun to do as a mother/daughter outing once she's old enough. Plus, one of my friends got her daughters ears pierced and I guess they put them on too tightly and they kinda got stuck in her ears and had to go to the pediatrician to get them out.

I am really glad that I never pierced DD ears. She hates the thought of it, doesn't even like to watch me put in mine. It may not be her thing and I am glad I respected that. If she starts to beg then I might cave arounbd age 8 or so. Hopefully I can wait until she is ten.
Hey I just met you, and you're my baby. This is your family, we're kind of crazy...
SO and I just talked about this and I thought it was a good question for everyone...
Personally, I am not going to pierce my daughter's ears when she's a baby. What if when she's 16 she hates piercings of any kind? She would be mad at me and mh.
I got my ears pierced for the first time when I turned 12. I wish I had waited a little longer, as my ears didn't take well to the piercings themselves and the backings grew into my ear....
I wish I had never pierced my ears. I never wear earrings, and now I have 5 permanent holes (I double pierced my lobes and one cartilage).
I am very against piercing a child's (10 and under) ears.

I haven't really given it much thought, but I don't see anything wrong with piercing ears as a baby. I'm a girly girl so a little sparkle in her ears is cute to me. I was 8 when mine were done and I can remember being terrified and flinching as they were done. But having lots of bright plastic colored earrings (80's) to choose from when picking out my school outfits is a fond childhood memory.
No. I think it's wrong to modify someone else's body for your own personal reasons. If it were me I would want a choice, not someone deciding for me to put holes in my body. If my daughter wanted her ears pierced fine, but I just don't think it's fair to not give her the choice.

10 or 12. She has asked about it already!!!! as my 5 hear old nieces have pierced ears but no way in hell I am going to do it this young. One of my nieces has swallowed an earring back and the other stuck an earring or back in her nose. I'm, no, not dealing with that.
I got mine done for my 10th birthday and will probably do the same for DD if she wants to. It was something my sisters and I all got to look forward to and decide on our own.

yes! in my culture, we pierce baby girls' ears when they are 4-6 months old. I love the look, I love that they can wear the gold that they receive for their baptism and I love that the little girls, actually start looking like little girls. If they don't like it when they are older, they can take it out!
my 2 sisters and I, and everyone in my family, for that matter, have had them pierced at a young age, and if anything, we've gone to get another one...to each their own
Personally, I dislike the look of pierced ears on an infant. I would prefer my daughter get her ears pierced when she's old enough to make the decision. My ears were pierced when I was 7 or 8.

I'm actually very against tattoos and piercing in general (my ears aren't pierced!), and I would have been livid if my parents did something like that to me before I was old enough to consent. I have a friend who had her ears pierced as an infant and they never closed up when she got older. She hated the nasty slits in her ears left from her parents stupidity.
I wouldn't let my daughter get her ears pierced until age 10 and only if she REALLY wanted it. I'm hoping she doesn't though..
Ive always thought of I had a little girl I would pierce her ears as soon as I could (my mom waited until I asked though), however, after evading so many different points of view, I might rethink my decision. Thanks for making me see outside of my box ladies
Wow I feel like my experience was so different. I had to wait until I was 12. It worked for me so that's probably what I'd do with a daughter. I don't even wear earrings on a daily basis though!
If she wants to one day it can be a birthday present. I remember doing that with my Mom and Grandma for my birthday.
I think it is super cute on babies who have their pierced. I have really sensitive skin and can only wear the real stuff with jewelry and still my ears hurt after I wear earrings. I was afraid LO would have those issues too and I didn't want to deal with infection in ears with a new baby.

I'm Italian so it's common for us to have them pierced very early on. I got mine pierced by my grandmother before I was 4 months old. They are nice and even! If I have a daughter, I'll definitely be piercing her ears at an early age.
I haven't read through the responses yet, but I'm thinking I'll be in the minority here. The OB that delivered me was a friend of my mom's, and he pierced my ears the day I was born, as a present to her. (Although I have two older brothers, she lost five babies before me, and had to have a hysterectomy right after I was delivered. So, he wanted to give her something special.)
My mom and I both always thought it was wonderful, and now, with all my struggles, I'm going to ask if my OB will do the same if I have a girl. My OB is great and has struggled herself. I think if she can, she will.
Mama to 5 angel babies, 1 rainbow baby, and 2 more angel babies.
I would probably pierce them at 3-6 months. Honestly, sometimes when babies are that young, it's not always easy to tell a little boy from a girl (for strangers anyway) and I like the look of little studs in a babies ear. I think it's adorable. Plus, it's easier to take care of at that age when they're not fussing with them.
I had mine pierced at about 2 years old.
