Nurseries and Baby Gear

Narnia nursery?

My boyfriend and I are (finally) able to get working on our nursery and have been thinking about a Narnia theme. They were his favorite books as a kid (the only ones his ultra-Christian mom let him read, really) and I've been wanting a storybook theme anyway (I'm a HUGE book nerd) that hasn't been way overdone.

We've talked about replacing the ceiling light with an iron lantern-looking fixture, and my mom is going to paint a mural for us (probably Aslan), she did my bedroom growing up and I loved it. He was also thinking of getting a dark wood door with some antique-looking hardware since there's no bedroom door yet... kind of to look like it might be from a wardrobe.

Does anyone have any other ideas, or maybe has seen a Narnia nursery lurking online somewhere? I'd be really grateful. Opinions welcome too! I'd rather the theme stay kind of subtle beyond the mural... just little touches here and there without being super obvious, if that makes sense.

  • Maybe put a quote from the books on the wall.

  • Also, have a wardrobe in the room.

Or, what about framing some of the illustrations from the books?

  • Maybe the gifts of sword and shield, bow and arrow, horn, daggar, vial.

    A map of Narnia.

If you want anything beyond Lion Witch & Wardrobe, you could do the Dawn Treader, a silver chair, a tree with a reflective pool, a few horses, etc.

  • Also, if you haven't gotten the crib yet, you might want to think about it being "sleigh"-like.

  • How about hanging big white paper snowflakes in the room like how nurseries have paper lanterns hanging. Narnia makes me think of how it was winter all the time. Maybe search Etsy for a custom piece of artwork or a wall hanging. There is a children's picture book version you can frame the pages.

  • How exciting to meet another mom to be doing a Narnia theme!  I am due in May and my furniture arrived this week for our lion witch wardrobe themed nursery.  Hope some of these suggestions might help, if you havent finished up already (I've been feeling so terrible I havent started my murals yet, but I hope to finish them in the next 4 weeks...)

We chose a medium grayish purple for our little girl's walls (Wal-Mart, Violet Stained Glass).  This color is going to make my 3 murals really pop and my husband keeps saying it looks very royal (since all the kids ended up as kings and queens at the end of the books.)  Also it is not pastel/babyish so a good color to grow with her.  If it had been a boy, w e were going to go with a spring green, kind of a subtle nod to Aslan brining Spring back to Narnia.  I probably still would have gone with green but once we found out it was a girl, my husband lobbied really hard for the purple, but he never really liked the green.

I come from a fairly creative family, and it was actually my parent's idea to go with sleigh themed baby furniture since Edmund spends so much time riding around in the White Witch's sleigh and also because of Father Christmas.  I really wanted to go with white, here's the crib and changer/dresser we chose: https://www.amazon.com/Stork-Craft-Vittoria-Convertible-Cherry/dp/B0051SDNPK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333149068&sr=8-1

I have been saving this World of Narnia Calendar since I was in High School just in case and because I loved the illustrations, and I took it to Kinkos and made transfers to go on a projector for a fool proof way to do my murals.  The illustrations by Deborah Maze are a bit more cartoonish/graphic/easier to copy than some of the others I have found (more on that in a minute) https://www.amazon.com/The-2000-World-Narnia-Calendar/dp/0694010936/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1333149340&sr=1-1-catcorr

I am going to do 3 murals 1) Lucy and Tumnus at his Cave 2) Lucy and Susan riding Aslan's back after his "resurrection" 3) All 4 kids getting coronated at Cair Paravel.  I am for sure going to paint the Lucy/Tumnus Mural because it is going to be about 6'X4'.  I am starting to run out of time with the other two, so I might end up getting the images custom printed instead.  I have been looking around (Walmart, Kinkos, local print shops) and I can do this for under $150.  The other two murals are going to be 4'X3' or a bit smaller.

I know you said you wanted to go a bit more subtle though so here was my other idea if I did not do the murals.  There are quite a few children's books on Narnia and I was going to take images and get them blown up or just reprinted and frame them.

I think the most beautiful was illustrated by Christian Birmingham.  It looks like he used chalks/craypas to do the illustrations https://www.amazon.com/Lion-Witch-Wardrobe-C-Lewis/dp/000675368X/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1333149961&sr=1-3

I also like this one illustrated by Tudor Humphries.  He uses watercolors.  There is one particular image in this book of the 4 kids at Mr. and Mrs. Beavers and they are talking about Aslan.  The reaction on the kids faces is just like in the book, each has a really different reaction.  I always thought this was really profound, how each of us as individuals reacts differently to the supernatural/spiritual.  I still may find a way to incorporate this into the nursery.  https://www.amazon.com/The-Lion-Witch-Wardrobe-Narnia/dp/006055651X/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1333150075&sr=1-2

Here's the one I bough with more Deborah Mays illustrations, and I think she has 2 or 3 others like it: https://www.amazon.com/Lucy-Steps-Through-Wardrobe-Narnia/dp/0064435059/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1333149460&sr=1-1

My husband and I are avid readers and have already saved 3 boxes of books we want to share with our little one, so for practicality, we are putting a bookshelf in the room and not a Wardobe. Kind of bummed over that one, but the room is TINY 9'X10' and we have to consider function too not just design.  The very first thing we bought for the baby was this set of Narnia bookends.  I know, not really the most practical thing for an infant, but we were super excited to share or Narniaphilia with her.  https://www.amazon.com/Chronicles-Narnia-BOOKENDS-Weta-Disney/dp/B0038ST3T0

I really want to find this Mr. Tumnus lamp, but havent been able to find one for a reasonable price--it's a collectors item :-(  https://cn1.kaboodle.com/hi/img/2/0/0/b9/3/AAAAAlC2iWwAAAAAALk0jw.jpg?v=1198870037000

We've been able to find a lot of Lion stuff for the nursery, but we dont want to go so overboard on the lion stuff that it overpowers the rest of the theme.  This changing pad cover, however, is still my fave: https://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Plush-Changing-Orange/dp/B004GJXMB0/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1333150740&sr=1-1

Finally, my mom is making the baby a quilt that features silouettes of all the Lion/Witch/Wardrobe characters and themes.  It has Mr. and Mrs Beaver, Aslan, Mr. Tumnus, Lucy, the Wardobe, the Lampost, and the White stag.  I searched google images for silouettes, resized in Word, printed and traced onto the fabric and then my mom cut and appliqued this onto muslin for a 9 patch quilt.  We made the silouettes dark purple instead of black.  There are two prints for the borders.  One is a light purple with little crowns on it and the other is a light green with hearts and leaves.  Around the edges of the quilt, Mom's embroidering  "Every year you grow, you will find me bigger" my fave Narnia quote from Prince Caspian.

  • My first thought was a silver chair (are you taking ideas from the whole series?) This was the first image that came up for a glider type chair in silver.
