Nighttime congestion

My LO seems to get really congested at night when we put him to sleep. I don't notice the congestion during the day, but at night it is quite obvious. My LO seems to cough, make a noise like he's trying to swallow something in his throat repeatedly, and then eventually fuss until he wakes himself up. He also snores most nights. I am wondering if this congestion is playing into his lack of sleeping? I am not sure what to do to help him. I have tried using the blue bulb aspirator the hospital gave us, but nothing seems to be in his nose. I just want my LO to be able to sleep. Between his gassiness, acid reflux, and congestion he has a very hard time sleeping longer than an hour at a time.

Re: Nighttime congestion

  • I've heard that reflux can cause congestion.  Could that be what it is? It can make babies cough when the acid comes back up. Have you tried colic calm before bed? Also, does your baby sleep on an incline? Something like the RnP or swing? That could help.  Also, I've heard it helps if you keep them sitting upright for 20 minutes after they've eaten.

  • Last night was the first night we used the RnP. He seemed to like it and sleep pretty well, but still had the congestion. I did notice that he did not snore as much though. Is colic calm like gripe water? We have been using gripe water occasionally, but not bed for bedtime. I usually give him gas drops right before his last nighttime feeding. I just hate watching him squirm and grunt like he is in pain...I am thinking of calling his pediatrician again because he dose of zantac they put him on is so low. I am not sure if it is helping him at all. Especially if reflux can cause him to be congested. My poor LO has bags under his eyes from his inability to get a good night of sleep.

  • My DD used to sound more congested and only at night like you've mentioned. I've noticed that as she has gotten older she doesn't sound congested anymore.  I've heard that babies digestive systems mature as they get older, obviously, and that the reflux gets better.  How old is your LO? Yes, I think colic calm is like gripe water. Its all natural.  You can find it at CVS for 20 dollars I think.  We used it a couple of times when she was younger and she liked the taste and it instantly soothed her and she fell asleep.  It does turn their mouth and poop temporarily black, just so you don't get freaked out.  Maybe try giving him that before he goes to sleep? Also, maybe you want to try a humidifier on in the room while he sleeps, and I use a sound machine with white noise that my DD likes. Been using it for awhile so she associates it with sleep.
  • He will be 4 weeks old on Sunday. It seems with his gas and reflux that he never feels very well. He tries pushing the gas out all of the time, even in his sleep. I try burping him as much as possible, but his little belly is so hard with gas. I might have to look into that colic calm. I am glad you told me that it turns his mouth/poop temp. black or I might have had a heart attack. We also have been using white noise (his sleep sheep) and swaddling him. I thought maybe it was his 3 week growth spurt that was making him so irritable, but now I think it is much more than that. Being a FTM is so hard. I feel like I am always trying to guess what is wrong and how I can fix it for him.

  • I know what you mean! Im a FTM also. My DD is now 13 weeks and I remember thinking the same as you about her congestion and gas and crying.  Wondering if what I am doing is right or if I should be trying something else. Going crazy thinking if it was from something I ate etc. (I bf). I think as moms, and especially ftm, we will always be thinking that way. It does get easier though...you start to really learn your baby's cries and needs and you start to feel more confident in being able to soothe them. You start to learn what works for you and your baby. Good luck with the colic calm! I hope it helps :)
