How do I start solids?

I know that you start with rice cereal but that's all I know.  Any good sites that will tell me how to introduce new foods, how often, how to make my own food?

  • Once your little one has the hang of rice cereal, look into starting them on other soilds. I started with carrots, which can be easily made at home by boiling them until they are very soft and either mashing them as you would potatoes or putting them through the blender/food processor or a food mill. There is a really good book I can recommend too that I got as shower gift called the Healthy Baby Meal Planner by Annabel Karmel. She gives you recipes as well as which foods are age appropriate to begin them on. I think you should be able to get it through Chapters/Indigo/Coles no problem an its about $25 cover price.?

ditto. and you actually don't have to start with rice cereal -- or any cereal for that matter. we just started last week with oatmeal cereal. we give dd some in the morning. yesterday we added pears to the mix. it's a mess but she seems to like it!

  • our pedi suggested we start with oatmeal cereal instead of rice since rice tends to constipate babies..just a thought.

She then said we give that about a week so ds gets the hang of it and then we can introduce something new each week...but try same for 3 days to make sure there are no allergies. puree everything...start with veggies and fruits (except for citrus....some babies have allergies). bananas are good but be careful because they can also clog things up :-)

    good luck and have fun!

My pedi actually told me not to feed her carrots (unless it was sold as baby food).  Carrots from certain part of the country contain high amounts of nitrates which can give her a certain type of anemia so don't take regular carrots and make baby food out of it.  The reason that gerber has carrot baby food is because they only buy nitrate-tested carrots.  Of course, there is so much to worry about these days, you can't worry about everything.  It's just a thought.
