Baby Names

Naming your baby the same name as a friend??

Hi-

My husband & I can not agree on a girl's name for the life of us.  We have about 4 names that are "just OK".  There is one name that we both love, but it happens to be the name of a friend of ours.  This is a friend that we made while in grad school and since grad school we all moved away and live 2000 miles apart, but keep in touch (mainly on Facebook).  Husband thinks it'd be fine since we'll most likely never live near this friend.  I'm wondering if it'd be too weird?  What do y'all think???

 Thanks!

  • I think it's perfectly fine.  She's not the only one with that name anyway.  You could give her a heads up if you are worried about it, but I don't see why it would be a problem.  A good friend of mine is naming her daughter my name.  I know she's not naming her after me, she just happens to like the same name.  Not weird for me at all.

  • When I first saw this I would have said no, but since you said you tend not to see them that often I don't think its a big deal.  If you saw that person on a weekly basis with your LO it could be awkward.

  • Since you guys don't live close together, I don't think it would be a big deal. Particularly if it's not an uncommon name- if the name is Octavia, it might be weird, but if it's something like Charlotte then it's totally fine.

  • I think it is fine!

I know a zillion Katherines (and many go by the nickname Kate) and never once had a reservation about using the name for my DD.  She is not named after anyone and not one of my Kate/Katherine friends commented negatively - most just joked that I had great taste! :)

If I discarded every name of every friend I have it would leave me with very slim pickings.

  • She is 2000 miles away- if you both love it, Id go for it

  • I had my girl name picked out for years. Before I even met my husband. A friend of mine (we used to be roommates) had her daughter almost exactly one year before I did and used "my" girl name. I still went ahead and used it for my daughter. We still see each other and get the kids together and it's no big deal. I say go for it if it's a name you both love.
