Babies: 3 - 6 Months

What size clothes to buy?

Can anyone tell me how long their baby wore newborn clothes for? Ive heard so many different answers from people..a few people told me only a week and then some people told me almost 2 months. I know it depends on your baby, but I just want to know the average time period.  I don't want to buy too much or too little. Thank you !

  • DS fit in them for about a month where as my DD was in them for about 2-3 weeks.

LO never wore newborn sized clothes or diapers...actually, I take that back. I squeezed him into a newborn sized sleeper to bring him home from the hospital. I don't think the poor kid could have straightned his leg if he wanted to.

When I got home I had to bag up all of the newborn clothes I had bought/been gifted for donation. I swore I would never buy anyone newborn sized clothes as gifts again.

  • Mine was in them comfortably for a month.  She was 7 lb. 9.5 oz. at birth.  Someone bought her a newborn sized outfit for a holiday and I managed to squeeze her in it at 6 weeks and she didn't complain.  I would just buy what you need for a month and if you need more (doubt you will), you can get it then.

  • It depended on the item and brand. He grew out of footed sleepers within two weeks, but I could still cram him into NB onesies at two months.

  • DD was born a week after my due date at 7lbs 2oz. Her 0-3 month clothes were too big until she was about 2 months old. So she wore a lot of repeats, which is totally fine.

I would recommend buying some very basic items in newborn sizes. When they're that small, comfort is more important than cuteness. Think lots of pjs, onesies, etc.

  • I think that my DD was in her's for about a month. I agree with the pp it really depends on the brand. I would only buy a few sleepers in newborn then 0-3. Those will last longer. Oh my DD was 7lbs 15 oz and 20inches if that helps.
  • DD fit in them for 3-4 weeks.  She was 7.14 at birth and 9.14 at 1 month

  • I think DS was only in them for about a month maximum. If you want to buy newborn I suggest just buying sleep-n-plays instead of whole outfits as they are inexpensive and won't be worn for a long period of time.

  • I didn't have any newborn clothing except for the outfit she wore home from the hospital. I ended up buying about 8 NB sleepers when DD was 5 days old. She wore NB for 8 weeks.

  • DS was 9 lb 7 oz and 22 inches at birth and was still able to wear NB clothes, even though everyone had told me not to bother buying them. He was too long and his feet were too big for NB footed sleepers, but he was in NB onesies, jackets, and pants for an entire month before we fully transitioned to 0-3 mo.

  • DS wore them until he was 9 weeks old. He was 7 pounds 2 ounces at birth. Everyone said not to buy NB size cause he wouldn't wear them for long. Well...we had to go out an actually buy him clothes that fit. His going home outfit was HUGE!

  • My DS only wore NB for 2 weeks. My DD, who is a peanut, wore them for about 8-10 weeks depending on the brand.
