Bedtime Sleep Aids?

Does anyone still use sleep aids to help LOs fall asleep at night?  If you do, when do you think you will stop using them?

We have one of those sound/music projectors we use for ds and I am debating when to stop using it.  I think it would help when we travel (mostly to visit family) we wouldn't have to worry about setting it up or even bringing it with us.

Just curious to what everyone else is doing. TIA

Re: Bedtime Sleep Aids?

  • We used a white moise machine for about 9 months. One night I realized that I forget to turn it on a lot more than I remember to. It didn't seem to change her falling asleep/staying asleep, so I just stopped.

  • We weaned off of one sleep aid last week, the pacifier!  I've been debating not using the music but at the same time I like her having that noise as it drowns out other noises.  We just use an iPod with classical music.  She napped great with a shed being built right outside her window a few weeks ago.

    So, I'm not sure...I'm torn!

  • We still use the vacuum cd. It helps with the dogs barking.

  • We use a pacifier. Will probably keep doing it for sleeping for a while 'cause it helps and she's not the greatest sleeper. I was always worried about her becoming too reliant on music and white noise machines so didn't use them so much when she was little. Also, I think they mostly kept her awake.

  • We used to have a video monitor that played music you could turn on from the handheld remote/video. It broke and I about cried. It wasn't bad though. She was kind of lost without it for a week and had trouble getting back to sleep quick if she woke up early. After that though it was smooth sailing. Now we just read stories, say Ni-Ni and she's off to sleep.

  • Joshua is still using his pacifier, has two loveys and his FP Seahorse for bedtime.  When he gets tired he'll crawl over to his crib and pull out the loveys and the pacifier and lay on the floor with them.  I want to break the pacifier in the next 3-6 months.  The loveys and seahorse are easy enough to carry places and sometimes I think the seahorse's music helps put me back to sleep when he wakes up during the night and I hear it over the monitor.

  • E still uses her pacifier, we tried to break her from it a month or so ago and failed miserably.  She also has a taggy blanket and a seahorse but the seahorse usually just ends up on the floor.  When she's sleepy she also goes in her room and reaches in her crib for her pacifier and taggy (today she randomly chose a stuffed sheep laying on her floor and screamed when I didn't put it in her crib) then lays on the floor.  I'm hoping I can convince her to "give" her pacifiers to B when he comes out so we can get her off them.

  • We use to use a sound machine for DS and he also use to sleep with a pacifier.  We took the pacifier away just before his first birthday.  For Christmas he got Twinkle Twinkle Little Scout, and amongst other things that it does it plays 20 minutes of bedtime lullaby's, so we lay him in the crib and turn it on every night, it is small and can come with us when we go somewhere, I am not really sure he needs it though.

  • Have you ever tried not to use it? I remember thinking JT was so stuck on (his blankie, the Sleep Sheep for a while, the pacifier for a while) but as it turns out he really isn't/wasn't that hooked on any of them.
  • I'm the one hooked on the sound machine now..lol.
