Hi! After lurking here for a bit, I've decided to take a leap of faith and start posting. I've been a regular over at IF since early December. Our first IVF/ICSI cycle was cancelled due to poor response on a max dose of stims. Cycle 1.2 has been quite the roller coaster...
From 4 mature eggs, we ended up with only 1 embryo. Based on age and other factors, we really believed the odds weren't in favor of this lone embryo sticking. Instead of a flat-out BFN, I ended up in beta he!l. Beta #1 was only 7 and I fully expected the numbers to drop thereafter; instead they steadily rose through beta #7. The night before beta #7, I started having red bleeding that lasted several hours. By the next morning, it was back to brown spotting. I had an u/s that morning which showed a gestational sac, along with a decent sized blood clot. My RE told me that I would likely miscarry in the coming days.
After that, things never again got worse brown spotting and I went in this Monday for another ultrasound. We were prepared for bad news but, amazingly enough, things had improved. Good news #1 = The blood clot had gotten smaller (RE is now referring to it as a subchorionic hematoma, which it seems isn't entirely uncommon and he isn't very concerned). Good news #2 = The gestational sac has gotten bigger. Good news #3 (the best) = As RE was looking for the yolk sac (which he did locate), he got sort of excited and told me to hold my breath. He then pointed to a flicker on the screen...our embryo's heartbeat! MH and I (and, it seemed, our RE) were shocked and ridiculously excited.
RE said that I'm still at an increased risk for miscarriage -- something about the ratio in sizes between gestational sac, yolk sac, and embryo...along with the fact that I'm measuring behind (although, I *think* even that is better than it was last week). Still not totally in the clear, but I think we're finally going to allow ourselves to breathe and live in this moment for now! Currently, I'm pregnant...for real and more so than during those never-ending beta tests!
Our next ultrasound is on Monday. FX for progress!
I really hope to be sticking around here for the next eight months. I look very forward to getting to know those of you I haven't already "met" and to sharing in everyone's experiences!!!
