Anyone have Balloon Cervical Catheter for Induction?

My Dr. Set my induction date for Apr 9 today which will be 9 days past my due date. I was so upset. I know I still have 2 weeks to go into labor naturally but it was just so discouraging to have that deadline date now. My Dr. Did say that she likes to start with the foley balloon catheter before pitocin. So I guess thats good. Has anyone gotten that as a form of induction and then not needed pitocin to keep things moving along? I'm so scared of pitocin and so discouraged after all of the work we've done preparing for a nucb.

  • I haven't but wanted to give you a positive story. With my first, I delivered at 42w; had to get pitocin and ended up with the epi. I had my 40w appt with my second and had no progress. I thought for sure the delivery would go the same way but my water broke at 5am the next morning and DS2 was born that night (med-free). Don't lose hope! My midwives recommended evening primrose oil and acupuncture to speed things along. Did your doctor mention either of those?

  • If you don't want to be induced than don't. You have to approve it, it's your body.

  • I was.  I had to be induced at 37 weeks, so it is a bit of a different situation.  I was a 2 when the balloon was placed.  When it was removed in the morning (they put it in at night) I was at 3/4 cm and I lost my MP soon after.  I did have pit after that, but I did not need an epi and had a great labor and delivery.  My whole birth story is in my sig. if you are interested.

My doula told me before my induction that she had seen women go into labor with just the foley, so it is possible, especially since you will be so far along, it might be the extra bump your body needs.

However, 9 days is really far away!  You'll more than likely go into labor on your own before that!  GL!!!

  • With my son, I was induced by having my waters broken.  I didn't need pitocin until I got an epidural (so the downside, the contractions are quite painful if you get your water broken) but I progressed to a 7 without any other intervention and didn't get pit until the epi slowed everything down.
