Six month and milk supply drop

I was able to usually get all the milk lo drank in three sessions at work. Friday, my supply tanked and I only got 2 oz in the first session. I got 10 oz total at work today. I usually get 15 oz. This weekend I nursed and pumped extra like I usually do.

Is this temporary or do I need to change something? I bought new membranes and always drink lots of water.

She is eating lunch at daycare and a dinner at home. Today she are a whole 3.5 oz tub at daycare and ate half a tub at home with extra cereal.

Re: Six month and milk supply drop

  • Are you getting enough sleep? I used to find that affected my milk supply. You could ask the doctor about Domperidone to boost your supply. It could be that your supply could be changing to meet LO's needs, but at 6 months, your milk is LOs primary food source so even if she is eating more solid food, you must keep the supply up. I would check with the doctor, or even better a Lactation Consultant or LLL or something similar might help.

  • I'm in the same boat. I had to start pumping in the evenings and weekends to make up the difference. Although I feel like I shouldn't complain. I know a lot of women have to do that regularly to pump enough milk. I started fenugreek supplements about a week ago and they seem to be helping but it might be too soon to say.
  • I started taking Fenugreek (2 pills 4x per day) and it has helped when my supply dips.  AF has returned a few times, and she does a number on my supply, but I have been able to bounce back with the Fenugreek so far.  Do you feed your LO before you nurse, or after?  I find that nursing first and eating after helps a lot (for me).  LO is much more willing to "work for" his milk when he's hungry, whereas if I were to give him solids first he might nurse for 3 minutes and be done, and less demand leads to less supply in my case.

  • My supply tanked around 6 months and I had to start supplementing with formula for a bottle or two each day.  It sucked!  But my freezer stash diminished really quickly after I was supplementing with that milk and after I was sick and had to pump and dump for almost a week because of the meds I was on.
