Toddlers: 24 Months+

Ikea Hemnes daybed

We went to look at beds tonight for DD and DH really likes this bed, mostly because of the deep storage underneath.  The issue is the clerk told us that she does not think you could safely put a toddler rail on the bed because rails are made to go between a mattress and box-spring and this bed does not have a box-spring. The mattress is low profile and light weight so I agree that it may not hold a rail safely in place.  You could put another mattress on it but I don't want to make it too high.  Turning it around so that the open side is against the wall would not work either because you would loose access to the drawers, which is the main reason DH wants the bed.  I did see online where someone made a cloud rail and put it in the drawers but that does not look sturdy to me.  I was wondering if anyone has this bed and if so, if you could recommend a rail that will work with it.  TIA

Re: Ikea Hemnes daybed

  • Yep-- we put dd in it at 24 months but with just one mattress-we had two ikeaa ones that we stacked. This made it a little lower. Shr has been in it 3 months and it's perfect. We had it before we had her and got lucky it's a perfect "big kid" bed! We just used a Bru rail-nothIng fancy and it appears quite secure to me. Good luck!

  • Oh and the storage is perfect-I didn't want furniture she could climb on while she was in a big kid bed so it's great for that.
  • Thanks so much for the info.  DH is still taking about this bed and was hoping someone may have had some experience with it.  Is the rail secured between the mattress and slats?

  • My rail has metal hook type things at the end of the straps that sort of latch or catch on the end of the wooden slats of the bed. My DD is SUPER rough and she cant pull it out. I think it's totally safe. If you want I can email a pic of the set up. Let me know.

  • We currently have an Ikea crib converted to a toddler bed for DD1 and we use this rail https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30099293/.  It attaches to the side rather than going under the mattress but it would depend on how thick the side of the bed is.  I will agree that the rail that goes under the mattress will not be secure enough (we have another Ikea bed so we've tried it).
