1st Trimester

Please tell me I haven't really screwed up...

Newbie, here.

Two weeks ago DH and I decided to do some fertility exploration, since I've had no period since I went off the pill in July.  I tested sporadically over the past few months, but each negative convinced me more and more it wasn't really worth thinking about/trying until I had some tests done to make sure all my parts work.

Bottom line: I became convinced I couldn't get pregnant.  Come to find out this morning I was wrong.  (YAY! but still in shock)

Soooo, in the past two and a half weeks I have had a full mouth of dental x-rays, I strung all our Christmas lights and I've been cleaning/changing the scooping litter in the cats' litter boxes.

Of course all of these pregancy no-nos come to me withing hours of getting the BFP.  Anyone have any additional info on the risks each of these things presents?  At least some info, until I meet with my Dr. next week?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Please tell me I haven't really screwed up...

  • am i missing something? are pregnant women not supposed to hang Christmas lights??
  • Loading the player...
  • You are fine, there is no going back and changing what you've already done and no use worrying over it. People do all sorts of pregnancy "no nos" before getting a positive test and have perfectly healthy pregnancies and babies. Congrats on your BFP!
  • It's too early to worry about any of those things.

Chillax.  The stress of worrying is probably worse at this point than all of the things you mentioned combined.

You'll be fine.  Just do things right going forward.

  • And ditto on the Christmas lights - what is wrong with that?
  • my best friend was in a similar situation.  Add anesthesia for getting her wisdom teeth pulled and vicoden for the pain that followed.

Her daughter just turned a happy healthy 7.  Try not to worry.

    but WTF on Christmas lights?

  • Did you eat the cat poo? That's where the problem comes in... don't place kitty fecal matter anywhere near your mouth as an appetizer, and you'll be ok. It's hella better to have DH change the litter for breathing in the powder and dust in it. So just stop now. We have 4 cats and baby and I are ok.

I had 2 margaritas before I found out I was PG and believe me... I'm ok. :)

Just don't stress, what's done is done, and you'll be ok. :)

  • You're fine.  Like everyone said, what's done is done!  If you're really concerned, talk to your doctor for reassurance - that may help.

I was at a happy hour the night before my bfp- I had 2 beers.

  • don't you guys know that hanging any Christmas decorations will turn your fetus into an elf?

Just kidding. Seriously. don't worry about what you've done just be careful going forward.

  • What the heck is "fertility exploration"?

  • what? i've never heard about the lead thing in christmas lights. i feel like my ob would have warned me about that seeing as we are in the holiday season. I'll check with the American College of Gyno--much more reliable than some of the hearsay on this website.

  • I actually thought you meant you were concerned about falling of a ladder!

  • Fertility exploration was bloodwork, sonogram, thyroid test, etc.  I had no history of natural cycles, so Dr. thought it was worth doing some testing.

As for Christmas lights, I'm not sure what the deal is, but I know there's a warning on the strings saying pg women shouldn't touch them, and my BF avoided lights like the plague when she was pg.  She had DH string them and turn them on and off.

  • im sure you are fine!  enjoy you pregnancy H&H 9 months to you!
  • Congrats!!  Be happy first...worry later!  You have 40 weeks to worry!!!

  • i didn't find anything on the American college of gyno website--but if the packaging says stay away if pregnant than I guess that's what you do!

  • Maybe a frustrated pregnant woman who spent the weekend untangling her blasted Christmas lights wrote the warning label as a gift to pregnant women around the world.

i don't know but it sounds like it involves some sort of space suit...?

  • imagemajorwife:
What can you do about it now?  What is done is done.  Worry about you can prevent going forward.

    Ditto. Cannot write more...

  • Um, really??
Wow, I think I need a turkey sandwich to celebrate being Jewish now!

It's fine. Your baby is fine. The human race is not so fragile that touching cat feces or lead in Christmas lights will do any lasting damage. Just be aware from here on out.

  • I don't know what the specific issue is but our christmas lights last year had specific warnings that handling could cause "reproductive harm" and that pregnant women shouldn't handle them directly. I decided my reproductive was already harmed enough as it is and didn't touch them.

To OP, I'm sure it's easier said than done, but as PP have said, there's nothing you can do about it now, so congrats and just avoid whatever concerns you going forward.

  • why can't you string christmas lights?
  • Your fine. ?I work with fluoroscopy (a form of radiation at work) and didn't find out I was pg for 6 weeks. ?So for 6 weeks I was in the fluoro suite ?(with lead on, but still areas are exposed) and all was fine. ?I asked my high risk doc and he said at that point in pregnancy, it's all or none- meaning if radiation or something like that were going to hurt the baby, unfortunately, at that early stage, it would result in a miscarriage. ?So- for you- no worries. ?

I also drank (in ?moderation), changed kitty litter, ?and took a birth control pill ?until I found out I was pg. ?I was so worried about all those things and I kept asking my doctor for a couple of appointments until I was reassured. ?My 2 month old is healthy and happy as can be with 10 fingers and 10 toes and developing just fine!

Just think about when people usually find out they are pg- not until several weeks/ a couple of months into the pregnancy, and fortunately, most babies are born healthy.

Congrats- and don't worry, like pp said, you have 40 weeks to worry- or 18 years...?

Unless you're eating the lights, you'll be perfectly fine.

  • I know I don't belong here, but...

Here are a couple good websites for future safety concerns:

    https://www.americanpregnancy.org/isitsafe/

    https://www.safefetus.com

As long as you didn't use the lights or the cat sh!t as breathmints you'll be fine! I had my 30th birthday party 2 days before bfp and it involved quite a lot of liquor. DS is perfectly healthy and sharp as a tack.

Take a deep breath- if you keep stressing yourself out like this you'll have a long 40 weeks! Wink

  • You can't change what you have already done. I smoked and drank right up until the BFP showed up on the stick. You are fine. If you are really worried  talk to your doctor but just don't change the litter box anymore. The christmas lights is a no biggie.
  • imagemajorwife:
Don't Christmas lights contain lead and that is the reason for the concern?

No... no.... no.... its mercury.  Christmas lights contain mercury and therefore NO pregnant woman should ever change the light bulbs in their house in case one of them accidently breaks and you get all mercurified.  Didnt they teach you that in those new age pregnancy books?

    Stick out tongue
