Baby Names

Is this name too common?

We both love the name Charlotte and would use the nickname Carli or Charlie. But I feel like its such a common name... not that I know anyone named Charlotte, but its been around and its not unique.  I would rather have a name that is more unique.  Any thoughts are appreciated!

Re: Is this name too common?

  • I see it a ton on here, but in real life, the only Charlotte I know is in her 60s.  And we know a ton of kids.

It is popular, obviously, but there's a difference between classic popular and trendy popular.  Charlotte is nice.

  • Its gotten more common, but its also one of those really classic, beautiful names. If you love it go for it. If it sounded better with our last name it would have been on our list.

  • I hear that it's popular but I have yet to meet any or hear of any in real life.

    I love the name!

  • It's definitely becoming more popular but I don't think it's so bad that it would keep me from using it if I loved them name.

  • I know a few little Charlottes, and it's definitely getting more popular, but you could do worse. There are many, many MORE trendy names. At least this one is spelled correctly and is pretty.

Charlotte is such a pretty name!

On the topic of popularity, it's very popular in the US. From 2000 to 2010 it jumped from 239th to 45th. It's estimated that it will be in the top 25 for 2011.

What I really look at it, is how popular it is in my area if I'm worried about a name being too common.

At the link above, you can see state specific rankings. You can't look up a name specifically, but you will definitely be able to see how Charlotte ranks as info is provided for the top 100 for each US state.

  • We are naming this DD Charlotte. I don't know anyone else with the name, but know it's becoming more popular. If it was a "trendy" name, I'd probably aviod it, but because it's classic I don't mind if it's somewhat popular.
  • I love Charlotte and have known a handful throughout my life (all ages).  It was on our list, but after my daughter was born we went with Amelia (my great grandmother, and great great grandmother's name).  This is very random, but every Charlotte I know is very sweet and also a brunette.

  • I've only met one Charlotte in my life, and she was about 10 years older than me (I was 16 when I met her.) I think it's a pretty name. I would say it's more classic than trendy.

  • I like it a lot and love the NN Charlie. I would like Carli/y except I knew one and she was a hootchie - so she kinda ruined the name for me. Obviously that is just my very personal bias.

  • I love Charlotte. I have yet to meet a single Charlotte at any age. It was on our list for DD2 but DH chose Caroline instead. I say go for it!

    THIS IS AWESOME!!!!  Thank you!

  • Thank you girls for all your input!  I love the name.. I think we're gonna use it and just hope it doesn't blow up in popularity the way everyone predicts it will.
  • I've been a preschool teacher for 6+ years and have only ever had one Charlotte (I've last track of how many Ava's and Aiden/Jaden/Raydyn/Kaiden's). So I don't think it's super popular. And I love it. :)
  • I don't know any IRL Charlottes and never met one.

  • My niece is named Charlotte, but not planning on going by any nicknames.  There are 3 other Charlotte babies that I do know who were all born in 2011. It is a beautiful name, though.  If you like it, then use it!!
  • We want to use Charlotte and nn her Charlie after my grandfather who recently passed away. I'm not a fan of Charlie for boy's name, so we agreed to go this route with a girl instead. I like it because it's classic as pp have said, but the truth is it is becoming more popular. A friend just named their DS Charles/Charlie and another friend is due any minute now and is naming his DD Charlotte (not sure if they plan on using Charlie as a nn). So sad, because I really want to use it for it's significance to me, but I hate the idea of it being so popular, especially among my friends.
