The Other Side of the Glass: A birth film for and about men

A fellow birth photographer sent this to me this morning and it looks interesting.  I do think that birth greatly impacts men and I'm happy to see a film like this surface.  I hope it opens the lines of communication so that more men feel like they can talk about birth choices, interventions and their feelings and roles in the birth of their children.

While I think that a film that talks about the male perspectives on birthing is a wonderful idea, there is no way I could convince my DH to watch (nor would I want to see) a film describing how he was "disempowered" at birth because of his circumcision, and how he consequently chose to disempower our son by making the same choice his father did. I do not believe for one second that the state of a man's foreskin defines his ability to help birth his children or protect his partner during the birthing process.

  • Wow, I missed that if that's what you took away from the trailer. I don't think it's about circ.

Not the trailer - but the text description of the film right under it. If it's not going to discuss circumcision at all, your friend needs to edit the description:

"The Other Side of the Glass: A Birth Film For and About Men has grown into a four part series. It covers a broad spectrum, from the Soul and consciousness, to introducing primal brain development, to fathers stories of their experiences of birthing their babies, to how the medical system is a war machine where a man cannot be educated enough to assure that he can protect his partner and baby. The film looks at how men were programmed by their own primal experience (conception through infancy) and how they were disempowered at their own birth, which most likely included circumcision. This early foundation is just part of their inability to stop the violation of their partner and baby during medical birth. "

  • Ah, ok. I see where you got that from. I get what you are saying, but if some men do feel that way, it's certainly ok to talk about. My dh is one I feel could benefit from this film, he does hold resentment over being circ'd and he felt helpless and overpowered by the interventions and "authority" at the birth of our 3rd. It's one of the big reasons we are choosing a home birth this time around. I'm sure many men feel disempowered through birth, I see it quite often in my work in the birth industry. I'm referring to birth experiences here, not circumcision. Also, my friend is a photographer, not the film maker :)
