Are y'all allowed to be on your phones (texting and stuff) while watching LOs?
I went to pick up J yesterday and when I looked in the window (I always look in the window to see what J is doing before I come in) and the afternoon teacher was sitting in a chair, with her feet propped up on the table and her knees bent, staring at her lap. Two kids were in one corner playing, Jared was pulling stuff off of a counter on the other side of the room, and she was completely oblivious to what was going on.
Do I have reason to be mad about this?
Re: Serendipity, don't you work at DC?
I knew she worked at one but I welcome anyone's input on this. I thought it was ridiculous that she would be texting. I hate to tattle on her because she just started working there and I don't want to be "that mom" but at the same time, just last week when I picked him up, he had trash all in his mouth and she was clueless.
I teach 10 year olds at an elem. school and I'm not allowed to have a phone during school hours!
This! When I worked at a daycare we were not allowed to be on our cell phones and our cells had to be turned off or put on silent so it wasn't disruptive. If you were caught using our phones you would get a warning and after that you would get written up.
I probley would say something to the teacher about it. What did she do when you walked in? She hide the phone or did she keep using it?
Stood up and starting tending to the kids and getting J's stuff ready to go. She said "I was getting ready to change his diaper. I can change him before you leave if I need to." So I touched his diaper and since it was pretty full I told her she could go ahead and change him. When she changed him, his diaper was FULL of pee AND poop! I was pretty steamed about it so I quickly left before I reacted in a bad way.
I would be pissed and I doubt she was getting ready to change his diaper if she was lounging on her phone! I would say something there is no reason for a kid to have that full of a diaper! She needs to do her job and take care of the children rather then sit around on her phone an let them do what ever they want.
I think you may be right. Before she came things were tolerable but now that she's there in the afternoons... Idk... I just get this feeling after thinking about everything. I think I may just find a nanny or beg MIL to come keep him lol
Yup, I do work at a center and we are only allowed our phones for a few reasons. One- a family emergency like someone being in the hospital for surgery or something like that . Two- when we go on walks so if someone needs to get ahold of us they can. Three- when we are outside where we don't have a clock so we can sign kids in and out. None of those scenarios allow for just sitting around and texting.
I would probably mention it to the director from what you described. If you don't want to get the girl in trouble, at least ask the director what their policy on cell phones is and go from there. Unless there was an emergency or something similar there is no reason to be on the phone, especially if the kids are awake and it's your job to engage them
ETA just read the rest of the reponses. I would definetly say something, she obviously not doing her job from what you've described and the cell phone may be the least of the issues.
I wish I had thought to do that! That would have been genius. Luckily, they do have security cameras so the director is going over all of them from this week and last week. She was livid when I spoke to her about everything.
